Considering new monitor for 1440p over ~25ft HDMI Cable

ssaulsbu

Hi all,

I currently have a Dell U2712HM, which does not allow 1440p over HDMI (max 1080p). I'm considering replacing it with the Acer G257HU, which appears to have HDMI port that will do 1440p.

I have an unRAID machine in a closet with a GTX 1070 passed through to a virtual machine that I do gaming on. I have a desk over 15 feet away where the LCD would reside. I'd like to run a long HDMI cord to the LCD and get 1440p so I can play games that way. I currently have the LCD in the floor of the closet with a 5ft display port cable; so I'm a closet gamer? xD

I'm having a tough time finding out what the max length of HDMI that would still support 1440p resolution.  Any ideas?

I may be wrong but since the HDMI signal is digital (at all ends) it shouldn't degrade over that distance. As long as the HDMI cable is good quality, the length should not matter.

the max distance i know you could use with a HDMI cable is 25meter, so that should be no problem

above 25meter you could get signal problems

Displayport length limit is something like 3 meters.

I know this is an old thread and I haven't logged on to this forum in a while, but I wanted to follow up on my solution in case anyone is looking to do similar.

I bought the Acer G257HU and a 25ft HDMI cord and ran it from closet to desk under the house. It has no problem displaying 1440p and I can now have my PC in the closet and my monitor on the desk!

Any certified High Speed HDMI cable should work for 1440p 60 Hz. There is no specific maximum length; if you as a manufacturer can figure out a method of making a 10000 ft cable that meets all of the test requirements for High Speed certification, then it's a High Speed HDMI cable.

Realistically you can find (genuine) High Speed certifications for cables up to about 50 ft (for well-manufactured cables) before amplified cables become necessary, but even those aren't too expensive.
