Either way-this is my main problem-the reference 480 costing more than a custom R9 390X-also with the clock speeds, Nvidia managed to get an extra 600 or so MHz out of their GPU on air by going to 14nm.....:

Without having a hardware scheduler, among other differences. Price issues I concur with, but it hardly mars the design itself. Clock speed concerns me if I'm not getting what I paid for or the performance difference has some dire effect to my use case. nVidia pulling higher clocks generation over generation at a greater degree than AMD doesn't bother me unless the performance I am paying for isn't keeping pace.

Nvidia aren't even on 14nm.  There cards are 16nm. Also the mhz don't matter.  Amd Ipc is clearly miles better but there raw clock speed is letting them down.

I'w not sure about that. AMD's Polaris 10 has 2304 SPs compared to the 1280 of GP106

Also, an MSI 390X is bloody cheaper than the 480, so in Australia at least the RX 480 is bloody pointless and AMD really dropped the ball again.

It's not because of AMD that they are expensive in Austrialia.

 

It's because of import fees and business 101.

 

The retailers have to get rid of their old stock to not lose money. Of course they are trying to still sell the old cards and make them an attractive option via pricing.

He referenced some kind of "cold bug" in the video... when the temp goes below zero, the GPU probably thinks something is up and has a hissy fit.

A cold bug is a hardware problem where an electronic component gets too cold to operate.

So it is not really a cold bug, but a problem with the bios.  "Goes into power saving mode"

No its a hardware problem but it can be fixed by a bios.  An ln2 bios just puts loads of voltage through everything and keeps all power phases switching at full speed to keep there internal temperature up.
