Thermal throttle... BUT HOW?!

Go to solution Solved by ivan134,

Choose one or more options

  • Redo the paste
  • Elevate the back so air can pass underneath more freely
  • Get a laptop cooler

Whilst I play CS:GO on my laptop the game runs smoothly until 10 minutes later where it hits 91°C and it's on 97-100% load. I tried to tune down the clock speeds on MSI afterburner but that didn't change a thing. The GPU normally runs at 800-1000Mhz but when thermal throttling it can go to 200-400Mhz. I checked the fans and they were quite dusty. I cleaned the heatsink and got all the dust out however this didn't change anything, so I ordered a descent laptop cooler (Havit HV-F2056) to try and fix the temps and the cooler only changed the temps on my laptop -15°C on idle however did nothing under heavy load. The CPU also hits high temps of about 90°C.

Here are some of the laptop specs (ASUS N550LF-CK095H):

- Intel Core i5 4200U @ 1.6Ghz (2.4Ghz boost clock)
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 745M 2GB VRAM
- 6GB RAM @ 1600Mhz
- 500GB Hard Drive
- Windows 8.1 (Windows 10 completely breaks my graphics drivers and causes the card to stop working)

Would appreciate some help, thanks!

P.S: I'm kinda new so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section!

Honestly, what you have is a fine used tissue. Use it for other things less demanding and replace it. If you're on a budget and mobility isn't a concern go with a desktop build. You can build a VR machine for less than 600 bucks. Running CSGO won't even take that much.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Having a PC last without needing upgrades and a low budget don't mix well. When you're ready post your budget in the build section and you'll get some great advise though.

Meanwhile each laptop is different and if you make a mistake replacing the thermal paste you may ruin it. My advise is let a friend with more experience help you.

Is using any random thermal paste bad?

Also if you could help me pick parts for a pc with these factors:

- Try to get Intel i5 Skylake processors in the mix (Probably won't overclock)

- Try to include a cheap VR card (Maybe the XFX RX 480) http://www.ebuyer.com/751840-xfx-amd-radeon-rx-480-4gb-gddr5-hdmi-3x-displayport-pci-e-graphics-rx-480m4bfa6

- Try to include this case: Aerocool 500 White case with window and card reader

- Try to include ddr4 ram 8gb minimum

- Figure out the rest for you! thanks :) (Try to keep it under £600-650 or $780-850 (CONVERSIONS NOT 100%  ACCURATE))
