Pretty sure my PSU died. So usually there's an active LED on my keyboard when it's on sleep mode, and the standby light on my Corsair 500R. 7 hours ago was working flawlessly. Hit power button nothing, only once I saw my H100i Block Light flicker, and my case light for a split second after I hit the power button, then nothing, then i hit the power button a couple of times after that and nothing. Been working flawlessly for the past 3 years.

Im thinking its a dead PSU.

Computer Specs: Motherboard: Z87-G45
CPU: i7 4770k [4.0GHz OC]
GTX770 2GB ACX
16GB Ram Corsair
CX750W Bronze
120GB SSD [Windows 10]
1TB HDD

Bought a new PSU. and it will come Wednesday.

CORSAIR CXM series CX750M 750W 80 PLUS BRONZE

I bought the modular, since im actually gonna take my cable management a bit more seriously, since before there wasnt really any.

But why an old CX unit... Those things are kinda awful if they don't have a grey label.

How are they awful? A couple of my friends have them, and had zero problems with the unit.

it has a grey label on it tho.

The CX series aren't aweful PSU, but they aren't made for "enthusiast" or "high-end" PCs.

just google "corsair cx problems" and you'll understand

The green label ones use sub par internal components that only operate up until around 30 C. The grey label ones are fine.

Ah so, probably that's why my CX750W Non-Modular probably died. Didn't even know about this!

Modern units of the CX aren't the same PSU the old CX was, internal components aren't the same.

If you can get your hands on another computer (even a potato one), test the PSU in there to see if it works), however by your description, it seems it died.

Wasn't aware! Thanks for the info on that.

The fault is on CWT, the OEM that makes the CX PSU (Corsair doesn't build the PSUs, they use a OEM for that). They are using mostly cheap internals on these units.

Unless the PSU isn't from a brand that is itself a OEM (for example Seasonic or Superflower), then the company is having an OEM making the PSU.

If you want to find out what OEM is each brand using, for each specific model you can go to this link: http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/PSUReviewDatabase.html

The link also contains links to reviews from reputable hardware reviewers (using adequate testing gear).

As you can see by on the link provided, the CX units started getting worse scores after 2015. HardOCP give the CX 750 a FAIL score (it's not the M variant, but it's using very similar components), and johnnyguru (my preferred PSU reviewer, Linus' preferred as well) Gave the internals on the CX 750M a 6/10 in quality, a lower score than his old CX reviews.

Is that the new CX750M or the old one?

did you tried troubleshooting before buying anything???

there are good instructions here

Quote

The machine doesn't do anything. No beeps, LEDs or spinning fans.

  1. Check if your power cable is firmly plugged in on both ends (you would be surprised how many issues this resolves)
  2. Check if the power supply (PSU) has a button to cut the power to the machine. Check if this button is in the position denoted with ON or I
  3. Check if EVERY power cable is plugged in securely, reseat if necessary.
  4. Check if the power button is installed correctly (consult your motherboard manual)
  5. Try shorting out the pins you connect the power button to manually. If this powers on your system, you have a faulty power button.
  6. Check with a device of which you know that it works if the power outlet you're using is actually providing power.

If this hasn't solved the problem, check if your PSU isn't dead. To do this, you can follow these steps:

  1. Unplug your power cord and/or flip the switch on the back of the PSU in the position denoted with OFF or 0
  2. Unplug every connector coming from your PSU (this is very important)
  3. Using a bent paperclip, short out the green wire on the 24 pin header with any of the black wires, like so.
  4. If you have a PSU that shuts down its fan under low load, or a PSU that is fanless, connect something small like a hard drive to it.
  5. Plug in your power cord and/or flip the switch on the back of the PSU in the position denoted with ON or I

If the PSU does NOT power on (the fan/hard drive you connected should start spinning) after following these steps, your PSU is in all likelyhood defective. Request an RMA.

If the PSU DOES power on, then the problem is most likely your motherboard.

... but you said there are lights but the PC isn't powering on, did you try bypassing the case switch? it's possible that the case switch isn't working correctly!

Tried jumping the power switch from MOBO, and nothing, tried two PSU's the new 750W i bought, and one that was laying around, doubled check everything. Did the pin and both PSU fans spun. Changed the CMOS battery and still nothing, so im pretty sure the motherboard just is dead. Its 3 years old and went through hell one summer. Took the whole system apart, and i i found one of the screws completely loose, and not even attached to the motherboard. Rest of the components are fine. Just bought a Z97 Gaming 5 MOBO, should fix the whole issue.

Just finished rebuilding my desktop, the motherboard was sure the issue. I guess after three years, the MSI Z87 G-45 had enough, and it was time to die. lol

Thanks @wkdpaul @Comic_Sans_MS @TheRandomness @ForsakenLive for your input, and helping! Much appreciate it!

Cheers,
TheKitten
