Hey guys just recently got 1080 FE, from what ive seen from others videos it seems like my performance at 1080p is quite bad, weird thing is that if I turn the settings to 4k its almost the same to the 1080p performance. I also tried turning the settings all to low and at 720p and still got almost exactly the same FPS

Heres a comparision vid with GTA V

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFi_h0AVa84

Exact same thing happens with Witcher 3, Division and Dying Light. On Doom and Overwatch my fps at 1080p goes over 100fps.

My motherboard and cpu are pretty old but I wasnt expecting a bottleneck of that much, but I dont really know much about computers.

cpu = i7 2600

gpu = gigabyte gtx 1080 FE

psu = Corsair HX-650 ATX 650W 80+

Mobo = Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3

it could be a PCIE lane bottleneck. the i7 2600 comes with PCIE 2.0x16. That's basically the same as PCIE 3.0 x8. I've heard that 3.0x8 bandwidth can begin to limit even a 980 or 980ti, and the 1080 is much faster than that. When you play a less demanding game like Overwatch or Doom, then it probably has enough strength to run them well regardless of this issue (or it has less to communicate with the CPU). And when you increase resolution on more taxing games without any detriment, that's because all of the new work it has to do, is done almost solely by the GPU itself without needing to communicate much additional to the CPU (which is where these lanes come in)

This could explain why neither your CPU or GPU are able to work at full capacity, they are unable to communicate to each other fast enough due to not having enough bandwidth to do all the work they are capable of doing. I'm fairly new to computers, so this is just a guess (albeit a somewhat good one), but I think this is likely the issue for you.

Getting a more modern CPU/motherboard with PCIE 3.0x16 would alleviate this issue if this is, in fact, the source of your problems.

Most likely a driver issue. Uninstall all divers with DDU and reinstall directly from Nvidias website.

Or maybe it's a thermal issue but I doubt it since 720p provides same results...

Buy a new 6600k or a 4790K. Your CPU is the bottleneck here and DF did a video on this.

Does bottlenecking acutaly damage my performance though? I always thought it was more like holding the gpu back, cause in my case if I lower settings in the game my fps doesnt increase, surely id at least see some differnce in fps between max settings and low settings.

correct me if im wrong but before upgradin to gtx1080 i had a 970, which in the gtav benchmark was gettin pretty constant 60fps on high settings. Shouldnt I at least get the same fps at the same settings if it was a bottleneck with cpu? Im currently not seeing any change in fps no matter what settings I play on, so low textures with not msaa has the same fps as very high textures with msaa

I actually don't buy that the I7-2600K is his problem. I watched a very long video about these old gen CPU's vs the new gens and they were shown basically to only bottleneck about 10-20 fps. I watched my exact CPU play the exact game against the I7-3770K which is my absolute maxed out CPU I could get and the guy that made the vide gained 10fps but the overall fps average was much more stable.

Your card was roughly 2x my 970 and it should be faster if I'm not mistaken.

Your's seems to be acting like the 1070. I've seen 1080 cards usually hit 3K higher in Firestrike in the GPU score alone. That is taking out the CPU factor afaik.

So it seems like the 1080 has decided to do something different today. While playing in GTA the GPU usage was going all the way up to 100% while the all the CPU cores were around 50%.

Sounds about right to me...

Thats good =) okay this is really weird, seems like the problem has just fixed itself, yesterday I was getting in the 50fps for witcher 3, now its in the 70s with hairworks on.

Thank you everyone for your help haha

Moving around the world on horse im avg 100 fps without hairworks and everything maxed, hairworks at max settings puts it down to about 70. Novigrad has a few dips below 60 without hairworks.

Yesterday I was barely getting 60fps haha.

Any ideas what could have caused that??
