RX 480 or Something Else?

Hey man while i appreciate the input id like to say two things.

1) I am perfectly happy playing non shooters at high fps and medium settings and playing rpgs and the like at high or ultra with 45fps.

2) It isnt a matter of saving. i have more than enough money to buy two gtx 1080s today if i wanted to. i work 30+ hours a week making well over minimum wage. its not about lack of money. its about how much i am willing or want to spend on the product.

I don't spend on GPUs.  I get what I need.  If I was to drop $700 on a GPU I would end up pissed off because I don't need it and would feel I did not get my money's worth.

Contrary to the what Frenchman with a $600+ GTX 980Ti says, the RX 480 is not a weak card at 2560x1080.  ROTTR is the worse case scenario for the RX 480, IDK why... it just is.  The 480 beats the Fury in Fallout 4.  It all depends on the game.

The GTX 980Ti is not 2.5x the performance of a RX 480, but you sure pay that extra in dollars.  If the RX 480 is weak, the GTX 980Ti is utter crap.  ;)

The problem with the RX 480 is the implementation of the power delivery and the cooling of the reference card.  Wait for better versions.  The GTX 1060 might be out soon too, so you get to see that card as well if you wait a bit.

Hey guys. i have turned to the forums infinite wisdom for this one. Im thinking about an upgrade. I have a 2gb gtx 960 now. That is paired with an I5 4460 3.2ghz and 8 gb of ddr3 ram. I have a 2560x1080 ultrawide. at this point in time i play most games between medium and high with 45+ fps. i play both games like rainbow six siege, the witcher 3 and games like CSGO and LoL. i am definately waiting for the gtx 1060 to come out just to see but wanted some suggestions. should i even get a 480 or should i opt for a gtx 970 or an r9 390? i have no idea and want suggestions. thanks :D

If you can swing a nice aftermarket 390 for around $250 I would go for that. It's faster from the get go and overclocks way better than the 480 so it'll pull ahead even further. And the 390 is faster than the 970 as well.

I'd wait to see how the 1060 is then decide then, if the 1060 is good get it if not the 390 seems better than the 480 but not by so much that it's price won't come down, however I feel like nvidia skipped a generation so the 1060 will likely be better than a 970/390 key word likely.

I'm also looking for a new GPU in a similar price range. Personally, I will wait for the 1060. Discussion:

Nah no gen skip, if VEGA/polaris 11 delivers we'll have AMD real offering.

They usually only go one step up, so 770~to 960 etc etc, this time 980ti ~1070 instead of 980

Wait for 1060 and aftermarket 480 reviews. Pity the 480 reference PCB is such a mess, the chip itself is capable.

Paul at Paul's hardware did a nice video in which he test the 480 on ultra wide resolutions including 2560x1080 in DOOM, ROTTR and GTA 5...

as you can see the card is pretty weak...even at 1080p 21:9 you have to lower the settings a fair bit:

I wouldn't buy a 480 or 1060 for that resolution. Save for something more powerful, is my recommendation. Wait for AMD to release an actual flagship or go for a 1070. You should be playing at 60fps+ on PC, not 45.

I'd wait for the GTX 1060. Sounds like it'll be a little beast of a card. Rumors say July 7 announcement with July 14 release day. :)

Hey man while i appreciate the input id like to say two things.

1) I am perfectly happy playing non shooters at high fps and medium settings and playing rpgs and the like at high or ultra with 45fps.

2) It isnt a matter of saving. i have more than enough money to buy two gtx 1080s today if i wanted to. i work 30+ hours a week making well over minimum wage. its not about lack of money. its about how much i am willing or want to spend on the product.

again. i dont feel im missing out. i am comfortable making my own monetary decisions. i asked for advice for a graphics card in a specific price range. i DIDNT ASK for advice on how to spend my money, how much i should be spending, or what settings i should or shouldnt be comfortable playing at.

so ill say it again but more blunt for you.

thanks for the input BUT DONT TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE

Dude, I was making a recommendation based on your post, not trying to tell you how to live you life, lmao.

You said "at this point in time i play most games between medium and high with 45+ fps." and it's only natural to assume if you're playing on PC, you'd want to get 60fps or more since we're not on consoles. So again, like I said, whatever floats your boat, but you're missing out. I wasn't trying to attack you or anything, mate.

For best bang for your buck I'd wait for custom PCB RX 480 4GB, which should be coming out in the middle to end of this month. I don't think the 1060 is going to be as good for the money since it sounds like the 3GB version will be $250 and since Nvidia is upping the prices on their gpus this generation pretty significantly vs last.

maybe the RX 480 will change that though...if the 1060 is not head and shoulders above the 480 in games then nvidia will have to lower it's asking price some...

hummm...i paid 800$ CAD for that slightly used GTX 980ti son...and it's worth every penny...when paired with that amazing 2560x1440 IPS 144hz Gsync monitor it's THE BEST gaming experience one can have by a long shot...i HIGHLY recommend it...you see EVERY FRAME, it's butter smooth...no screen tearing...and can run anything on high fidelity and stupidly high and smooth framerate with no lag or stutter or any of that shit...it's the 100% PERFECT gaming experience.

Why? They didn't have to with the GTX 760 when the R9 280 was beating its ass. They didn't have to with the GTX 960 when the R9 380 was smashing it.
