Do these things actually work?

Hello,

I was curious to know if something like this - http://www.ebay.in/itm/GekkoScience-Compac-USB-Stick-Bitcoin-Miner-8gh-s-BM1384-/111959108703?hash=item1a11486c5f:g:zGQAAOSwWBJXA-CR actually works or is just a big scam. It claims to have 8gh/s mining rate is amazing considering it's power consumption and price. Also if this does work can it mine ETH as well?

Never seen a USB miner above 900Mh/s so either they are new or it is fake. I will say though they still use a lot of power and need a seperate USB hub that is powered otherwise you will burn the one out on your PC. It is an ASIC so ETH doesn't allow that and they are changing the way it works to gambling in a few days so I would not even invest in anything. At 8Gh/s you are sorta looking at nothing for most currencies.

Just keeping this here as a There are ASIC miners for SHA256, Scrypt and X11 but for everything else you need general-purpose computing devices such as CPUs and GPUs to mine them then trade those for BTC.
