Black desktop

So this is my parents old computer. I2 quad 8gb ram, WD 1TB, hd5770, antec VP450F and some junk HP board

On longing in to profiles I get a completely black background but I can open up task manger and it shows up or anything off of it. Do I need to do a clean install of windows 10 as it was updated from  window 7 or what can i do to get this to work.

If you can get task manager open, try running explorer.exe from task manager. (File -> New Process) or something similar.

 

If explorer won't start like that, then you might be wanting to look into re-installing Windows X, yeah.

wonderful then. copy all the things you want to keep to a flash drive or something and then reinstall. best choise.

I can get explorer to open but am not sure where file-> new process is

I was under the impression that you were loading in to a black background, with the windows taskbar & etc. not showing up. How are you getting explorer.exe without starting it from task manager?

 

I don't have the Windows 10 task manager in front of me as I use W7 at work, so I can't tell you. You might have to go into the details view of task manager.

I agree with liquid though, if you can get your files off and just re-install it would probably be easier and take less time in the end.

I am doing it that way but somehow on 1 one user I am able to see the desktop properly even tho before the reboot it was the issue. Am trying to get my parents to get a 120gb SSD to have windows installed on and getting rid off all the pre installed bloat ware.

I know but it is quite a bit of files thankfully we have a 500gb external hard drive or I could make my main systems HDD a network drive.

well just move them to somewhere safe and then use installation media and select the usb thing. then when it finishes get rufus and make usb bootable. then boot to usb and install! also do custom install and delete all partitions and then you can make different partitions. best thing to do is create 2 partitions. one 150 gb and rest data. and install windows on 150 gb partition.and then all things on data, because if you need to reinstall you delete the 150 gb partition and all your files will stay if theyre on the other partition. then make the unallocated part into a partiton and install windows on that.

I got a windows 10 CD already. I plan on just getting a SSD and wiping the old drive now.
