Bypassing university internet restrictions

BananaKnight

I'm studying university where porn and torrent downloads are blocked when using the university wifi ( and games when using non-hostel wifi) . I think that i could bypass them by using a vpn or tor browser but each connection is logged into using our own id so i am scared that if i did that someone would notice something fishy. The public university wifi is logged in when first connecting to it (for lack of better words) and the wifi in the hostel is logged in with a third party website called extremebb. Can someone please teach me how to be completely be invisible to my university, so i can browse safely.

They have these restrictions for a reason. Don't do anything stupid, or you'll get caught and get in SERIOUS trouble. I don't understand why people would want to break rules. Go home and download your stuff.

EDIT: You really think by bypassing the Uni's filters you'll be safe? Sorry that doesn't work like that.

If they see loads of traffic funneling through a proxy, that is fishy.

Even they may not know what it is exactly it is you are receiving, they can tell what type of connection you use.  If you have a remote connection that can easily be used to suspect you of wrongdoing.

Proxies are more for preventing people from tracing you.  With a proxy, you can hide behind a dummy computer.  A university is the middle man connecting directly to your pc.  There is no hiding.

My school didn't do much more than send the students emails telling them not to download torrents, so I just used froot VPN back when it was free and everything was fine. I'm not sure if your school could know what's coming or going if you have a VPN so you should be able to get past their restrictions fairly easily.

I highly recommend you follow the IT guidelines of your university. You can be kicked out of the university if they notice you willingly bypassed the security settings.

Giving illegal adives is not allowed in this forum.

Also you don't need porn or torrents during school time. Shift such internet traffic to your home place and take the files with you on a HDD if you really need them.

I know, i knew this before i came here, but this is not about my need for all that illegal things, it's more about maintaining my freedom on the internet. Also, i live here for 3 months at a time, but i have enough for years.

When you use a service provided by somebody, you have to apply to thier rules. If you want freedom, get a 4G modem and an unlimmited data plan. You can get them here in Switzerland for 35$ a month.

Thats not an option here, this university is in the middle of an oil palm estate. Anyways, it is not really important, this is just something i wanted to see if i could "bend" the rules

When you use a VPN, the ISP and other network operators can't see what you're doing, they just see lots of traffic going to a VPN. Tor is similar except I believe it's easier for people in the middle to see what the data is, just not who it's to. I'm probably wrong.

Whether or not using a VPN or Tor is allowed is based purely on the TOS of the network you are connected to. Even if it doesn't say "no VPNs" there probably is language saying "I will not use any means to attempt to bypass network restrictions" or something to that effect. depending on the school, violations of the network TOS can have larger ramifications than just kicking you off the internet - they may kick you out of the dorm (hostel?), the school, and if it's a government owned school, that may be considered a criminal case of hacking.

DO NOT EVEN TRY THIS!!!

i know a person who tried similar thing, trying to bypass uni's restrictions for website where it was clearly stated that people trying to do that would be punished. he was caught red handed, and was fined about 1 semester fee or expulsion from uni. he ended up paying the fee.
