If you're still using the same hardware, and the manual says you cant, then nothing has changed.

Even if you had an upgraded motherboard, it's still not recommended to mix ram speeds. If it's a different size, but from the same memory provider, you'll be fine.

On the manual, it will specify how much RAM you can upgrade to.

Its not recommended, there is no guarantee it will work.

I've seen no problem with mixing ram speed. Just run both sticks at the slowest between the two.

That's fair. Prebuilts have proprietary connections and buses and software

Oh, on modern motherboards it's still not guaranteed to work, but I've heard stories of people mismatching speeds, capacities and vendors, without a problem. The worst I heard is "they don't work together".

To be safe whenever I recommend a build I still include kits of 2 or 4 sticks, but for someone who already has both sticks, I see no harm in trying

His manual only says not to because...

They can't gaurantee it will work, But I have ran mixed RAM in every PC I've ever ran- DDR, DDR2, DDR3. I have mixed sizes, brands, speeds, timings. I am currently running 2x8GB 1600 KLEVV with 2x2GB 1333 Ramaxel, and CPUz shows its running in Dual channel just fine. It will probably work, but proceed at your own risk. It will not cause harm if it doesn't work, except to your wallet.

Ok. I did some research and this is what i have found....

Unlike old motherboards modern motherboards support different size of memory. But thing is that assume your motherboars has 2 memory slots. You put in 1x4GB and 1x8GB you will get expanded ram capacity of 12 GB but you will not get any benefit of dual channel memory. In other words, the doubling of bandwidth will not occur.
