Good evening,

Tomorrow I am getting my Samsung 850 evo 250gb in the mail and will be swapping it in to my boot drop from my Mushkin Chronos 120gb SSD. What I want to do is some quick benchmarks to measure the performance gains before I do so. What tests/software would you recommend to use to gather that information?

well the drive was slow for 2013 standards: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Mushkin/Chronos_240_GB/13.html

That does look pretty terrible and the only thing I can think of is:

  1. Are you sure it's in a native 6Gbps port and not one provided by a third party? The closer the port's number is to 0, the better chance you're hitting a native 6Gbps port
  2. Is the SSD running in AHCI and not IDE?

My Motherboard is the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, I have the SSD plugged into port 2 which is a 6Gbps port. This was more a baseline for my new 850 Evo that should be arriving in the mail tomorrow from Amazon, got to love Prime with like $4 overnight shipping.

no, your HDD isn't faster than that

plus, SSDs have insanely better access times than HDDs

yeah it is

about 150MBps sequential writes

thats faster than the 100 in the screenshot

and still, everything else is extremely slow for an SSD

as you can see, cheap SSDs have bad degradation over time

on the outer edge, perhaps

and I'll bet you the OP doesn't have the chipset drivers installed

Outer edges means it takes longer to pick up data because it's spread out. Inner edges means the data was on a fresh drive. The transfer happened on neither.
