GTX 980 vs GTX 1070

Flavortown2k16

Tittle says it all,  since the new pascal line gpus are storming the market the last year models are getting cheap(ish). So should i save 100e or more big ones and get gtx980 or get the new gtx1070.
I only have 1080p monitor and im not really that intrested in 4k or vr, and i have gtx960(2gb) and fx-8350 as cpu atm. So what do you say?

GTX 1070 is way more powerful than the GTX 980. Definitely get that if you can.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

100e is significant for you? if so...just get the GTX 980 it can max out just about any game at 1080p and your CPU will choke the hell out of a 1070 anyways...in fact even the 980 is too much for that CPU but hey why not.

Should i throw a cheeky breeki and get 970 insted? i dont think theres too much of a noticable diffrence than there is from 960 to 980/1070

What? The difference is huge. And don't get a 970 at this point in time, please.

No. 3.5GB of VRAM is going to bite you in the ass.

the GTX 970 is around 15% weaker than the 980...and there are some games you have to tweak the settings a bit to get 60FPS at 1080p...depending on price right now but the GTX 980 IMHO is where you want to be...also the GTX 970 even though a worthy upgrade to the GTX 960...you'll end-up at the same spot you are right now in about a year...i don't know...i would try to get a 980 personally...

If you need to save even more money, maybe look at AMD cards? an R9 390X for example is about the same as a GTX 980 in terms of performance.

don't believe the bull that guy speaks, he is kind of toxic from the posts i've seen. I personally think the 980 is more than enough if you are on a tight budget however why not concider the RX 480? it's cheaper with around the same performance.

clearing things up I am referring to Nano making it sound like your cpu will make the cards performance will drop so dramatically that it's crazy while for the OP's needs the 1070 or an RX 480 8 gb might be the best choices for the sake of not hitting a Vram limitation within the next few years.

The performance will not be on par with an i7 6700k or a 4770k or whatever have you that costs dramatically more. but the CPU will only limit CPU bound games in which case he'll still be able to play amazingly.

I've seen the performance of a 980 Ti in both my rig and a rig with an 8320 clocked to 4.4 GHz and the difference in games isn't as bad as people want you to believe. if you're a hardcore gamer wanting 144 fps + all the time then yes, sorry but your cpu might not cut it in some cases. but for the sake of just playing games it is more than capable if your GPU is as well.

yes, go for the 1070 if you're only team green because the 8 gigs of Vram will come in handy down the line.

I switched to an Ivy Bridge i7 @3,9 gHz with Turbo to 4,3gHz (i7-3770S) and TBH the only game where there's a noticeable difference is Blade & Soul. Even World Of Tanks works the same as it did on my 8350 @4,5gHz. But B&S is a shitty game in terms of optimization and I get FPS drops even on the i7. That's paired with an overclocked 290X which in benchmarks surpasses stock 980. Not to mention DX12.

haha yeah, I've seen as much. I actually made 3 of my friends buy FX series CPUs for their builds because of tight budgets and all of them love the performance. the multiple cores makes multitasking a lot more fluent than with some i5's and the motherboards are so damn cheap vs Z series boards.

one of these 3 actually almost bought an i5 and an Nvidia 730 GT instead of the FX 6300 (I know it's not great but it works) and a GTX 960
