New GPU but OLD cpu

Go to solution Solved by Quaker,

*heavy sigh*

There is no problem with using an RX 480 with an older i5-650. Yes, the i5-650 will then be the limiting factor or "bottleneck" in most games, but that doesn't mean that you therefore have to get some crappy graphics card that can only work as well as the 650.

Basically, if say, the 650 can only give you 45 fps in some game, then you can turn the graphics goodies up until the RX 480 starts to get less than 45 fps. The CPU does not directly limit the GPU.

So, get the RX 480 and you won't need to upgrade the graphics card when you upgrade the i5-650. The i5-650 may become the bottleneck, but it won't hurt the 480. :)

I have quite the old pc and use it for casual gaming. I am looking to build a new pc in the coming year, but don't have the budget to do it all at once.  My current pc has an i5 650 @ 3.2ghz. I wanted to purchase the amd rx 480 when it is released, but fear with my older cpu it would be bottlenecked pretty terribly. In case more info is needed, my pc is an asus cm5675. The motherboard is old enough that it seems like any other upgrade would require me to purchase a new mobo, cpu, ram, and therefore OS all at once...which I just can't handle. Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i5 650

dual core CPU with HT (so 4 threads) isn't really that great especially the low IPC of first gen core ix CPUs :/.What GPU do you currently have?

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

see if there are any used 2nd-4th gen i5/i7s+mobo avalible for cheap. if you really can't afford it, then i recommend you to move up to a quad core i7 or xeon and overclock it as much as you can.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

go look for used first gen I7s, if you can get a highend one that you also overclock you should be "fine" there will still be bottlenecking but it will be better then that crappy old I5

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

For optimised games it will be still fine with RX480.

But for some more CPU heavy games ... you should upgrade your CPU :)

Sorry for not including the graphics card in the original post. I have an amd Radeon HD 6670....so...clearly the 480 would be a huge jump. I recently purchased a new psu ( evga 550 gs) to prep for the coming upgrades. My current GPU leaves me so limited I thought upgrading it now would help the most.  In the future I will jump to a new i5...Probably in the 4440 area.
