How would one go about doing that without voiding the warantee?

Just take an air duster and try to get out most of the dust out, also NEVER open a PSU unless you really know what you're doing.

Yeah I know, PSU's are dangerous and i also value the warantee more than my life so I'd never take that sticker off on purpose

I was thinking of buying a RM850X (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139141) as its on sale and it's pretty future proof

Alternatively you could get the much better 750w G2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438017&cm_re=evga_g2-_-17-438-017-_-Product  but to be honest you don't really need that unless you want a multi GPU setup in the future and then the 550W G2 would be be plenty.

something is tapping the fan and ticking. It's gotten to the point where I'm so fed up with my psu I'm considering buying a new one

Yeah, just get a new PSU. There's probably a wire or something hitting the fan. The RMx PSU you mentioned is pretty good.

You can safely take apart a psu if you unplug it, turn off the switch, and then plug in a hard drive or something to drain the giant capacitors. I've taken apart lots of old PSU's. You can also buy a new fan if you get the dimmensions right. I once had to do that with a car inverter.

RM850X and 750 G2 are about on par with each other. The RMX has a quieter fan if that matters.

The RMx is actually a marginally better PSU but it's negligible.

Yeah, I'd say that does matter

The RMi has a better fan though as the RMx has a rifle bearing fan and the RMi has a fluid dynamic. If you want quiet then you can grab a Seasonic fanless but a passive PSU like the RMi/RMx or G2 are also good options.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
