I have a pfSense box I have assembled and have a 16 port managed/ unmanaged Dell Powerconnect switch. Do I need to use a crossover cable or adapter when connecting the switch to the router? I will be running the switch in unmanaged mode, i's just my home network. Will I also need a crossover cable for attaching the wireless access point? it is a Netgear WNDR3700 v.2 with DD-WRT installed on it.

No need for a crossover cable. A standard cable will do. :)

Thank you. Finally a straight answer. Should have been the first place I went to with this question.

To further add. Cross Over Cables are for connecting like devices. Such as 2 computer or switches. However many switches and such have auto cross over detection, which has killed the need for a cross over cable.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

So in the future then, if I want toexpand my network, i MAY need a crossover cable going from one switch to the other. But then, even that's not a guaranteed thing. Do I understand correctly?

No, it doesnt matter what cable you use. Basically all devices nowadays have something called MDI-X which removes the need to worry about crossover/non-crossover cable.
