I'm overclocking my i7 3770k increasing frequency starting at 4GHz and increasing 100 Mhz at a time then booting up and stress testing using Realbench for 15 minutes before i go into the bios and increase my frequency again. I'm aiming for 4.5GHz and so far i haven't had to change the voltage from my 0.05 offset.

Should i be using a different program for testing whilst i increase my overclock? I know once i get to 4.5 people recommend atleast 8 hours of prime95.

Basically i'm just looking for any tips and want to see if i should be doing anything differently.

i would use AIDA64 for stress testing and making sure the CPU is OK

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Actually use prime 95 version 26.6. Its the hardest stress test and actually shows stability. if there is an error, it will show in about 2 hours. unlike aida64. Your temps will be about 60-70C i can bet 1000$.

Why specifically that version of prime 95?

Use Small FFT for stability and thermal testing. here is Prime 95 26.6: ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/p64v266.zip

Because any other version makes the cpu hit 100C... This one is designed for Stability testing and thermal performance.

Ok i ran Prime95 for 10 minutes and it crashed so i went and raised my offset from 0.005 to 0.015.

Temps were as you said 60-70 (couldnt get a screenshot because i crashed)

I guess ill start again with this new offset and see if i crash again.

See, there you go, that's the most reliable test. temps are fine BTW. And please keep reporting back, I'm digging this lol

So you think run for 2 hours before i go and change the frequency? I'm at 4.2GHz atm and slowly moving up.

To play it safe, i would. It may be a pain in the ass. but worth it in the end.

Ok to play hearthstone whilst it goes or will it make it less accurate?

Best not too. System will most likely crash.

Wouldn't that just prove the overclock is unstable? Playing it on my phone instead. :P

If you're system is stressed 100% even checking email can make things shaky/laggy.
