I was watching Luke's latest video regarding optimising an SSD and HDD setup and was wondering why. at Windows installation Luke selected "New" at 1:05: https://youtu.be/QG4LXw4Nd5U?t=65

Can't you just select the drive you want to install Windows on and select next?

What's the difference? :)

Thanks.

When you select "New" it will create the other partitions that you seen there.  One for secure boot, one for Bitlocker keys, and so on.  They ALL have a major function to play and rarely take up more than a couple MB of space.

Look at the guide in my signature.

I believe he was trying to demonstrate how to get you hdd ready so the os can find it even though it's not the c: drive.

In the old days, you will have to click on New and then Format to properly create partitions. Now you don't. I guess for the How To, they went into detail on how it's suppose to be done properly. Although there is a step missing and that's to click format before clicking on Next.

So what would happen if you just went ahead and selected "next" without selecting "new"?

it should format and partition the selected drive as the os boot disk.

MS just made it easier to install Windows. In the past, you will have to first create a partition and then format it before it even allows you to install Windows. Right now, by clicking next it does it automatically. Now if you have a 2TB and would like to split it in half. then you'll have to do the way it's done in the video so you can set the size that you want.

Yes you can just install it without clicking to format it first. But if you do format, you get to set the sizes manually. You can make multiple partitions and so on. What luke did was didn't add any value to what he was trying to achievve. Maybe he just wanted to show how it's done.

Then you're thrown back in the WIndows 2000 days.
