I started up my computer this morning and last night to recieve the message overclocking failed on  the american megatrends page. I did not overclock anything and if it was I reset to default. Now my computer is running noticeably slower? What happened and how do I fix it?

Running slower could just be the placebo effect. When a overclock is done any desktop type activity will not see the performance gain. You can try clearing CMOS and redoing anything you configured in the BIOS. Beyond that I'd just lookout for future errors.

hhmm what CPU is it? Is it one that allows overclocking?

Also if you go in to your BIOS see if you can find the overclocking settings and maybe play about with them

5820K and what settings will i need to mess with?

Honestly I wouldn't know, all motherboards and BIOS's will have slightly different layouts. If you know the mobo model number you can generally get their manual online to check what settings control OC.

Is it an ASUS board? I have this sometimes when I've switched the TPU switch all the way to setting 2 (change BLCK as well as OC). Have a look inside and see if there is a yellow light.

It running slower may be a placebo, as Windows7ge has stated.
