hey guys!

this is my first post on the forum. I'm having issues on how i should setup my internet in the new apartment. First off the apartment building holds 6 families. I will be moving there with my girlfriend (shes an avid netflix watcher and i happen to game and torrent on the reg).  I Don't know if i should be going Cable or DSL i know cable speed is split between everyone in the building and DSL can be affected by the distance to the ISP but i cant decide on which one to get. the two services offered by the company are

cable

60 down

10 up

500gb bandwidth

for 82$ a month

or

DSL

50 down

10 up

1000gb bandwidth

for 70$ a month

I'm inclined to go with the DSL option since I'm a bandwidth whore but id like to hear from you guys! also if any of you have suggestions on what modem/ router i should get that would be great!i know computers but I've never dabbled in networking.

Thanks again!

What does this bandwidth stands for (non US here)? If you watch many series and download a lot you might want the one which has the most.

Sorry for Bad English, Baguette here

I'd ask other tenets what service they have and their experiences with their ISP whether it's overall speed or customer service. I personally hate Charter, but it's leaps and bounds faster than the DSL service in the area; and the DSL providers are somehow even worse to deal with than Charter. I keep trying to get my friend in local government to push for municipal fibre, but not many comprehend why they would want to do such a thing. Either way, buy your own modem, don't rent the one from your ISP.

'murican here and I'm also confused by this, as the up/down speeds are typically referred to as bandwidth. Are the 500gb/1000gb 'bandwidth' numbers data caps?

Boo data caps. That is the one thing I'm grateful Charter has yet to do. And yeah 50-60mbps is fine. I get about 60 down/6 up (like I said, Charter sucks) and download speeds are typically good enough; I can watch 4K YouTube video without having to buffer while watching. I live in a biggish house with 5 other roommates as well, and we don't have any issues with download speed. Uploads are terrible though; syncing Dropbox, uploading to YouTube/Vimeo...so slow.

If you go cable, this is one of the, hands-down, most popular modems: https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6141-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B00AJHDZSI/ref=sr_1_2/186-8472438-7168558?ie=UTF8&qid=1466601700&sr=8-2&keywords=cable+modem

I personally don't like modem/router combos, but it does simplify things.

ill keep that in mind however i don't know if i could manage with a 500gb cap. Quebec has such a bad internet service, two ISPs pretty much have a monopoly on internet services. the only non capped service they offer is a 10 down/ 6 up for about 100$ a month. Both of the companies work together therefore no competitive prices are available its a damn Sh*t show. Canada has syrup and a lack of trump to make up for it though

Yeah, I can't blame you. That sounds terrible. I imagine the overages for going over add up pretty quickly too.

The ASUS DSL-AC68U is pretty good, it has a built in modem.

do you know where i could purchase it? I could only find the RT version or an ebay seller which scares me a little. maybe i could get the RT and a Vdsl modem? im new to this networking thing.
