6800k vs 6700k? Which to buy?

Nena360 is right. If gaming is your top priority, then 6700k/Z170 will be faster (and cheaper too). However, any app that uses more than 4 cores will do better on 5820k/6800k. An overclocked 5820k will almost match 6700k in most games, and it blows away 6700k in any app that uses more than 4 cores. When games start using more than 4 cores (DX12), 5820k will outperform 6700k in those games too. 6800k is faster than 5820k, but 6800k is also more expensive. It just depends on your budget.

 

So again, it depends on what you plan to do on the rig. Both platforms play games very well. But if you plan to do any "serious" work, then 5820k/6800k is better.

 

Only gaming = 6700k

Gaming + coding + CAD = 5820k (if you have money to spare, then 6800k)

So I am planning on building a new pc this summer and am at a loss between the two processors.


Yes I know one has more cores and supports more PCIe lanes, but they also have differences in single core performance.

 

Let me know what you would do and why.

6700K for those who only care about single core performance. For that might as well just grab a ancient single core Pentium 4.

Seems like an incredibly lopsided statement... 6800k would perform straight up worse than a 6700k in gaming, and an "ancient single core Pentium 4" would be outmatched in most games today.... High end quad cores like the 6700k have their place.... don't make such bold and random statements. You will add confusion to the passerby's who don't understand the point you're trying to make...

Majority here only care about games, but fails to see the whole picture as to what they want to do with their PCs.

Spend money on a 6700K, just go with a 6800K or save a bit by getting a 5820K. You can 2 extra cores for when you need them.

This is the problem with most people when they configure their builds, they only care about gaming. So you're saying my 3.5GHz cpu won't play games as well at a 4GHz cpu?
