NOOB WARNING - need help with airflow

Go to solution Solved by soggyfatman,

I think the h80i will do just fine in the back as exhaust. But in gerneral, I think you always want a positive air flow, like more air in than air out. Way to do that is just do some simple math! Add up all the fans cm/hr or whatever unit and subtract the exiting air amount. I think 2 140mms in the front with your exhaust and 2 up top will do just fine since you will have 2 on the side to give it more air. If you are not worried about noise, load that baby up. Most h80i's ive seen have been on that rear single fan on the back so I asssume it is good to go.

Hello my people! I recently got some money to spend and I am looking to make my pc a lot cooler.

The problem is however I am not a genius when it comes to cooling and how to position my fans in my case. Let me start by telling you guys what I have and will be getting at the moment...

Currently I am using a corsair carbide 300r case with not to much fans in it and a very bad cooler on my i7-2600k (which is worrying me a lot since it wown't let me overclock it)

I am opting to get some spectre pro fans both 140mm and 120mm (also will get a scythe kaze master to control the fans since I wown't have enough mobo slots to connect all the fans.)

for my cpu cooler I am going with a corsair h80i extreme cpu cooler.

my question is how do I position my fans and the rad in my case to get the best cooling possible, I read the h80i needs to be used as intake for the best cooling but in the 300r I can only place it where the 120mm exhaust is really, at the back top. I will configure it with push pull but I don't know weither I should put it as intake or exhaust.

I have 2 140mm spots infront of my case 2 on top (I don't know if the second one will fit with the h80i in place, haven't tested yet as I don't have the hardware yet.)

Also have 2 fan spots on my side panel to cool my gpu.

Now how do I place these fans for the best airflow?

For the most part, with the front panel to your right hand side, bottom right to top left. That's the general layout anyways. Then any bottom intakes, if used, should be intakes and top should be exhaust. Yes, some people have situations that warrant changing it up, but that's the general rule.

And cable management is important too, don't forget about that. It's not just for aesthetics.

i think a good air cooler is better than an h80i. Silver stone has a great fanless one. and the basic airflow design is bottom front to top back. If you set up the airflow like that it will be great.

Thanks a lot for the help, and i'm not worried about noise I have the fan controller for that =) I'm happy to know its just fine to put the h80i as exhaust then. the fans on the side will be 120mm though not 140mm I don't know if that will make much difference, I'm guessing it wown't since I probably will only put one 140mm on top! Thanks again for the quick reply, I am new to these forums and custom building PC's and I know it already that this forum will be a big help for my nooby questions!

You did say though only 1 fan on the h80i, what if I put it in push pull configuration?

Thanks for the advice! Cable management shouldnt be a problem, I have room to hide the cables of my fans in the edges of my case and the 300r has quite some nice space for cablemanagement in the back.

I know it's not just for aesthetics but I would love for my case to look good and perform really well, hence I went for bitfenix spectre pros instead of pure performance noctua fans!

It's not an option to change my cpu cooler since I've already orderd the h80i just need to wait for it to be deliverd, I'm not a fan of having a huge brick hanging over my cpu anyways and I've heard many good things about the h80i.

Only bad thing I heard was the fans it comes with, they are really loud when you boot your pc it seems, they say it sounds like a plane taking off.

it's only for a few seconds during boot. not a big deal.

Ahh the push/pull is an age old question. Before I give you an answer, I would like you to watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyC3lZ5WFMk

It is very quick and informative.

Just watched it, so there's no real benefit in push pull then at all. I will follow your advice and set it up like this as an exhaust rear top of the case / radiator / 120mm fan exhausting air, It will save me some space aswell! You've been very helpful.

Glad we could be of help. Best is a good word to use on some things, but a difference of 1 degree temperature that costs you more money, yes it is the best, but is it worth it? But slap that baby up top or on the back, do whatever makes your machine look cooler!

Also! Welcome to the forum, stop by and introduce yourself on the general discussion page!

With the 80i as exhaust you will only see a difference of a degree or two, it is really not significant.
