Hello all,

 

After buying a H105 I figured I would mess with overclocking a little bit and ran into the AVX instruction set issue with haswell I suppose. Either I lost the chip lottery or this AVX thing is crazy. I had my OC up to 4.4 @ 1.25V, I passed IBT on high settings 20 times without a problem, did aida for 30 minutes without a problem. Load up prime 95 (using avx) blend test and crashed within 20 seconds with the 101 BSOD error which apparently means needs more vcore. So i bumped it up to 1.3v an instant crashed again I feel like going past 1.3v isn't really worth it. I bumped my OC down to 4.2 and it seems like its been going alright so far, 10 minutes in and I havent crashed. 

 

My question is should i just ignore the AVX instruction set and stress test without using it? From what I saw not many programs used it? I'd like to be stable, but I feel like this AVX thing hampers a lot of potential. 


Am i thinking about this all wrong? Thanks

Maybe I'm wrong, but the 4770k OCs like crap and you might just not be able to push it more.

isnt the 4770k the one with the bad TIM and they changed it in the 4790k, so thats why people delidded them

try using it with your regular daily workloads for some time, if you not experience freezes, lock ups or crashes with it, then it's probably fine

Ah, that would make sense i suppose. the TIM is how its connected inside right? If i remember right it was they thermal pasted it instead of soldered it correct? So people delid and use better paste?

I tried doing that, would run fine for days gaming, then randomly crash so I figured i should make it 100% stable

well if thats the case then that sucks haha. Guess ill try and find a reasonable OC and forget about it.

 

 

I bumped it down to 1.25v @ 4.2ghz and no instant crash, and just shy of 80C so i guess this is about where I will be at.

you wont be seeing soldered chips, as they're  so small that the heat from soldering would permanently damage the chip, so if you want the solder you'll have to move to X99

 sounds reasonable, should be fine

let it sit there for another couple of hours before calling it stable

also I've found IntelBurnTest to crush the unstable overclocks much faster and more reliably as the Linpack it uses produces a very periodic load which goes up and down, and these transition periods are the most stressful and the most often to cause crashes and lock ups

well i was on the forums and it crashed when i went to go reply haha. Time to go to 4.1 i guess. Ill give IBT like 20-30 cycles before letting prime95 go overnight later. Next time i buy a processor upgrade, I'll definitely have to read about OC reviews first...

umm.. OC reviews are meaningless apart from the ones that include a very throughout manual for all the different platform specific settings

there's always the lottery

I'd still try that 4.2 at perhaps 1.265V or 1.270V

Well I meant more so if the general chip is good or bad at over clocking. I know its an extremely variable thing between each chip, but it seems the 4770k is pretty bad at it. I'll give it a try at a higher voltage. Thanks for your help!

it's not bad... you just have to lower your expectations a little
