Hi, I recently bought a new case and when I connect headphones to the front panel, it makes an annoying buzzing sound. I am guessing when all the wires go together, it causes some static. Is there a way I can connect it to my sound card directly or do I have to buy a separate DAC? I have Asus Xonar DX with 5.1 speakers plugged in it.

Are there any spare ports to your sound card? Some cards let you reassign ports so what may have been a mic port can output sound. That's what I did with my onboard card so maybe you can.

there are spare ones and my onboard one allows it too but I can't find how to do it on my Xonar DX

Do you have proper drivers?

yes, the buzzing is caused by the front panel wire being zip tied with every other wire in the computer, not by software

First, a PC runs on DC current. It won't be that. Second is, WHY ARE YOU ASKING FOR HELP IF YOU "KNOW" WHAT THE SOLUTION IS!

I know what the cause is, not the solution. I am guessing one possible solution is to buy a DAC but I am looking for something which wont cost me any money. For example like AHaskin said, reassign the ports

Try plugging in the headphones onto the sound card itself. Could be a loose connection on the front panel.

it works in the sound card without a problem. I checked if the front panel cable is loose but its not :(

The buzzing is caused by the ground wire being shared by both the front USB ports and the audio jacks. Either unplug the front USB port or front audio jacks. And run a extension cable you need from the back to the front. My case has the same problem, never noticed cause at first I was using a sound card. Now I'm using integrated audio and that's when I found out. I need my front USB so I have that plugged in and my front panel audio unplugged. Then I went and got myself a audio extension cable and a audio Y-cable. Hook everything together and plugged that to the back of the computer. Now the buzzing has disappeared and I can use both my speakers or headphones. The only thing is, when I'm not using my speakers, I need to make sure it's turned off, unlike the front panel audio which automatically mutes it when something is plugged in. Your headset has a mic that also uses the 3.5mm audio jack? Then grab 2 audio extension cables.

Ill try to unplug it the usb cables I guess, I'll just use the back ports. Or I might go to the integrated sound card, even though that one is pretty much crap :( Thanks for the help though :)

My sound was a Creative X-Fi and it was a PCI, can't use it after I've upgraded to this X99 cause there are no PCI slots. And I can't plug my front panel audio jack into the sound card cause it does not have a header for it, it uses a non-standard type that's mostly found on old Dell computers. So I was never able to plug my front audio in the first place. What you need to do is unplug the front audio panel from your sound card and get a audio Y cable.  Plug that Y cable into the one of the sound card's audio jack that controls your front left and front right speakers. Now this jack will be shared between your head phone and 2 of your speakers in your 5.1 audio setup.

The header from my sound card for the front audio looks like this

I don't wanna use the Y cable because turning my speakers off is a bigger hassle than changing the speaker jack for the headphone one

so apparently it is buzzing also with my headphones plugged directly to my Xonar DX but only when the system needs more power (in games). Is there a way to get a round this or do I need to buy a soundcard with better shielding?
