Something else to consider... Dont compare it directly against the cost of the 5820k, but rather the cost of your entire system. Lets say your budget is $1500. the question isn't 400 for a 5820k or 500 for 6800k, the question is 1500 for a 5820k or 1600 for 6800k.

It still may not be worth it for you, in which case no sweat. but its something to keep in mind.

GL and enjoy your system!

Which should I get or should I wait for Zen?

The CPU, RAM ,Mobo combo costs:

-$700 for the 5820K

-$600 for the 6700K

-$450 for the 4790K

The i5 is a $60 difference! This is why I'm not considering it...

It isn't worth it

For video editing and rendering those extra cores of the 5820K are a benefit to have.

For gaming the 6700K basicly is the best choice atm.

But since you are looking for a mix between gaming and video editing,

it depends a bit on how much video editing and rendering you do on a daily base, and how big those projects are.

If you do it on a regular basis, then go with the 6 core 5820K.

From our guess, Zen probably won't be at Skylake IPC. It's not really worth it since you will be waiting a year or some to get Zen. Lisa said they are still working on it. The 5820K is your best choice

OK, Thx though, I had simply read an article which claimed that the high end Zen CPU will be as powerful as a 5960X!

Nobody knows anthing about zen yet.

So its hard to say anything, there are people who trow with rumored numbers.

But those can be taken with a large mountain of salt.

And if those performance rumors about ZEN are exaly legit, that the FX 8 core 16 Threads chip, can compete directly with the 5960X.

Then it will also not be cheap.

5820K is my advice.

Yes there are.

Of course not the best ones, but they will get the job done basicly...

But i would say invest a littlebit more and buy a decent X99 board then.

4790k is more than enough. I have no intentions of upgrading mine (knock on wood) for a good while as it's a beast of a cpu. I think most of the 4790k cpu's available now are from vietnam, which tend to run a bit hotter, but overclock further on less voltage.

If you're buying new, it makes more sense to bite the bullet and pay the little bit extra to get more current platforms. if you overclock the 4790k to 4.5 GHz and 6700k to 4.5 GHz, the 6700k still preforms faster. Then there's the added benefit of faster and more power efficient DDR4. Not to mention a more widespread adaption of USB 3.1, type C, thunderbolt, m.2/u.2, etc on skylake generation motherboards.

Now, that's IF you can afford it. If you have to count your pennies just to get there, then the others in this thread are probably right. there's nothing wrong with 4790k, and it would do just fine. But if you can afford more, I would recommend getting more. but if you dont have that kind of money or you need to funnel your funds elsewhere in your build, then 4790k may just be the CPU for you!

P.s. I'm not sure where you got those price numbers. Looking on PC part picker right now,

Skylake ($495): http://pcpartpicker.com/list/V892Q7

Devil's Canyon ($480): http://pcpartpicker.com/list/cGKbvV

Haswell-E ($650): http://pcpartpicker.com/list/YhnZjX

These numbers are gathered by using the Asus A series motherboard for each generation (as close of a direct comparison as you can really get). I then bought the chepaest 8GB ram I could for each system (since you're unlikely to be using less than that) its worth noting I spent an extra 30 bucks on RAM (4x4GB) for Hasewell-E, as I'm not 100% sure if it runs well with only 1-2 DIMMs.

Also, if you're going the X99 route, you might want to consider Broadwell-E and the 6800k. slightly more expensive than the 5820k, but new gen CPU's are just better.

For gaming my 4790k hits 4.8ghz and never goes over 50 percent load in games

its also a beast in video editing,

if u don't render 24/7 for a living

and don't mind waiting like a tiny bit more time u can spend ur money else where in your system

and this will give you and extra chunk of money to get either a better aftermarket gpu of what ur looking at now or the next card up

AMD (and proud) r7 1700 4ghz-

also (1600)

asus rog crosshairs vi hero x370-

MSI 980ti G6 1506mhz slix2 -
