Hello linustechtips forum, I'm looking for help picking the best CPU that can handle the most workload for under $500. My current CPU is an Intel i7-5820k and it's almost always at 95-98% CPU usage. Is there a better CPU I could buy that's under $500.  Thanks in advance.

A very.... how do I say it, "well defined" question. "most workload" means nothing, really. If you could be a bit more specific as to what you do with your PC, it'd make things easier for us.

At any rate, there's no upgrade for you under 500$. You'd need at least 1k if you want an upgrade (unless you can find a used 5960x for cheaper than that).

I don't know what you're doing but I get the feeling that it will max any CPU you buy.  I'm not sure anything on the market now will make a noticeable improvement over what you have now.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Thank you for your response. Sorry I'm still new to the whole building pc scene and I'm not quite sure what terminology to use. I use my pc mostly for an application called "osbuddy" which is a client for a game called "old school runescape." I can open and play on about 14-15 of them while watching stream on twitch.tv. I'm looking to be able to open and play on more of the clients with a better CPU if possible. Thanks once again

This is absolutly correct, but even being able to play on 1 or 2 more clients would go a long way in the long run.

I assume you've tried overclocking the chip you have then?

I have not. This there a guide you can recommend me that can show me how to be able to do this?

unfortunately CPU overclocking isn't as simple as using a slider. Thats why I havent overclocked my 4690k

I don't know any particular one specifically but if you just look around online I'm sure there are several good ones.  Even if it's not for that processor, the procedure is the same.  Or, you could start another thread about overclocking a 5820k.

Overclocking or chips $500 or under really aren't going to help you.  Perhaps build a second machine to have on your desk to shuffle some of that workload off of?  I guess you could go to some crazy dual processor E5 setup, but you'll have to drop a significant multiple of $500 for that.

Nope. Not at all. As I said, you need at least 1000$ if you want an actual upgrade.
