Sends power over ethernet cables. Used for powering things like access points, meaning that you don't need to have a power source in some random place in order just to power that access point.

PoE is a "standard" (more or less) for providing power over an ethernet cable, its very popular for access points, especially in large deployments where you can just put a single PoE injector switch in the networking clouset, and have ethernet AND power go from there to all the access points on a single cable.

 

issues are that its generally mindblowingly expensive, and when you want gigabit its generally even mindblowinger expdensive.
