My notebook only has a headphone/microphone combo jack and I want to use a separate mic/headphones.... If I use a 3.5mm jack splitter work to have separate devices?

A 3.5mm splitter is not a Dual TRS to TRRS adapter.

 

If you're talking to him somewhere else and the adapter is what he meant, then fine, but we don't want to confuse other Internetonians.

 3.5mm splitters are wired differently than Dual TRS to TRRS adapters. No product out there does both.

Most can work fine, I've used quite a few and they work.

I'm pretty sure you'll only get audio to come out but the microphone functionality will be lost.

What Aphexx and Shearme said because there are different pinouts for the TRRS.  Some have the sleeve as the ground and some have the sleeve as the mic.
