Ubuntu 13.10 final beta: Ubuntu for smartphones is almost here

With the upcoming release of Ubuntu 13.10, Canonical will be releasing Ubuntu Touch! They are looking to become 3rd when it comes to mobile OS and while they are still working out a few bugs and issues, I'm really excited to see what they have to bring to the table.

Here's the latest preview of the Ubuntu Touch by a dev:

edit: touch in place of edge

oh why this after I got a new phone? :(

IIRC, it's running on the Galaxy Nexus. Probably would work on the Nexus 4 too, and other devices. Least that's the device they used to demo it a while back at either CES or Computex (forget which one).

In the article, they said they have it running smoothly on Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4, which is great! Makes me wish I have an N4, even though I have an S3.

It's just the OS, coming alongside the release of Ubuntu 13,10.

They did try to crowdfund the Ubuntu Edge, which is a Ubuntu phone, but it failed to meet its funding goal.

Ubuntu Edge is more like Cyanogenmod, where they are made in the spirit of open source software, so I think they will see some success without the hardware.

However, Cyanogenmod managed to team up with Oppo, so their next line of phones will release with CM, instead of Android.

I could install it on my Galaxy Nexus, see how it runs. Or get a second phone to try it out (Nexus 4 is pretty cheap these days). I like the concept behind a unified OS the brings devices together, and Ubuntu is the second so far (after Windows 8).

I agree! I almost went with W8 and a windows phone, because one of the selling points unification of PC and phone.

I'm pretty excited, and I hope it becomes more popular, perhaps on a par with android. Ubuntu is a decant os on the desktop but I'm surprised sometimes when people haven't even heard of Linux.

If Linux lacks anything, its marketing, so I don't blame anyone for not knowing what Linux is. I really hope it catches on too, because I think Android and Apple (especially Apple...) are getting a little too comfortable being on top while Windows phone and BB are failing to compete.

Yeah, I agree, but also some more major devs porting applications too. If we can have many of the familiar apps of windows on Linux, then there's less reason for builders to buy windows... Hopefully steam os Linux the kick start it needs.
