So, have been thinking of buying a PS3 since its near the end of this generation, and I heard you could change the hard drive, but would an SSD work in it? If so I'll buy one.

Well since I like to download games I think it would be worth it.

It would work, but you'll get no benefit from it really. Game installs won't be any faster because the system is actually as fast as a hard drive at extracting files during game installs.

It will work, textures and things that are stored on the HDD/SSD will obviously load quicker, but the benefits aren't worth the cost though. A nice 2.5 inch HDD or hybrid drive is the way to go

what about loading times?

Generally speaking, they'll be slightly faster.

I remember reading somewhere that they tested an SSD in a PS3, and the gains were a few seconds at most. Definitely not worth the expense. Stick the SSD in a computer instead.

Depends on the games you are playing really. Even a 7200rpm drive over the 5400 can help loading times and texture loading quite a bit. If you have the money and can get a decent sized SSD than I'd say go for it but the stock HDD isn't all that bad unless you are only playing games like Rage or Skyrim, possible GTA5. Than you would see a benefit of an SSD.

Your signature suggests that you don't have an SSD in your PC... definitely get one for your PC instead of the PS3, Windows and programs become a million times snappier, however, games alone, don't benefit much.

It depends entirely on which games you are playing. Different games handle the loading and saving of information in different ways to circumvent the atrocious speeds of the default HDD that the consoles come with. As a result of these different techniques, some games will perform almost identically across any type of drive, whether they're the cheapest and slowest or the most expensive and fastest.

Certain games such as Gran Turismo 5 transfer the data in a more or less traditional manner without compression or other techniques to expedite the process. As a result, it will see significant improvements when stored on an SSD (I do mean significant. Loading difference for certain races can be as big of a difference as 40+ seconds between the default HDD and a run-of-the-mill SSD.

However other games such as BioShock seem to handle the data transference in an unusual way. Differences between various drives are minimal. Other games (though I can't remember off-hand which) can infact perform WORSE with an SSD, though never to a significant extent - at most it was a couple of seconds more.

Generally speaking, an SSD will see performance and loading improvements for the system and quite a few games. But it's not really worth it to purchase unless you already have one lying around, as you'll not see a sufficient performance boost to warrant the increased price and decreased capacity compared to traditional 2.5" HDDs.

No-matter what you go with though it'll be faster than the default one, most likely. It's quite awul. :)
