Upgrading to a 1070

Go to solution Solved by Guest,
  • 700w is more than enough
  • Yes edit: Well it depends on the card, 3 fans obviously gonna be bigger than 2
  • If you want the best results the Asus Strix would probably be best

Hi!

I've never really been a hardware guy, but LTT has made me more and more interested.

At the moment I have a GTX 780 stock that I got 2,5 years ago, and I feel it's time for an upgrade, the problem is that I'm pretty clueless, and I need a little help:

1. I have a 700W PSU, should this be enough to handle a GTX 1070 stock? Is it enough to handle an OC card?

2. Is the 1070 noticeably bigger than the 780? I haven't been able to find the dimensions of the card.

3. ATM I have three OC cards I've been looking at, with differing clock speeds and number of fans, is there any of these you would recommend? Price is not an issue:

* MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Aero OC, looks to have only one fan, lowest clock speed of them all

* MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X, two fans, clock speed varies on software, top speed is in the middle of the three.

* ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 ROG Strix Gaming, 3 fans, highest clock speed of the three.

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Now I just have to find out how big that Strix card is, my google-fu is failing me.

1. Depends on the PSU. What model is it?

2. The length varies for each model. The MSI Aero OC is 269mm long, the Gaming X is about 279mm long and the ASUS STRIX is 298mm long.

3. Rule out the Aero OC since it only has 1 8-pin. The ASUS STRIX will probably yield the best results but if anything goes wrong, you're at the mercy of ASUS' customer service. Might be also worth waiting for the EVGA FTW Gaming ACX 3.0

1. XFX ProSeries Core Edition 750W PSU ATX 12V V2.31, 80 Plus Bronze, Standard, 2x 6pin

PCIe, 2x 6+2pin PCIe, 8x SATA.

2. Thanks a lot! I think It'll fit.

3. Looking at the Strix at the moment, but if a better alternative comes along soon I'll probably go for that.

You're definitely good on the PSU front then since the one you have now is pretty great.

Sooo it looks like my case was not as spacious as I first thought. What you're looking at is a ~1cm gap between the GTX 780 (which is 267mm long), which basically means that I either have to go with stock, or cut up the metal drive bay. The gaming X is 12mm bigger than the 780, but I doubt having it stuck up against the metal drive bay is a good idea

Just bang up the power target, then go as high as you can on core clock then move onto the memory clock.

Easy as ever, my country isn't warm (UK) though so I doubt I'll hit >83c

I've never overclocked a card, this is software that does it basically for you? Mind telling me its name?

Most manufacturers have one, I use MSI afterburner

You basically move the sliders.

I gernerally start with a moderate core OC of like 150MHz and knock it up 10MHz at a time and test stability. Then I just put a few 100 on the Mem clock.

Thanks a lot, you've been a great help.
