Hello, I have a computer that I built that is not performing as well as it should, on paper at least, the specs are as follows

-AMD FX-4350, 4.4ghz quad-core

-HYPERX 16gb DDR3 RAM

-NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT 1GB (I know that this graphics card is ancient but it's all I have at the moment)

-ASRock 970m Pro3 motherboard

-Windows 10 Home

I do a lot of Photoshop and based on the minimum requirements this build should be able to at least usable.

Any ideas how to speed it up or what my next upgrade should be.

The worst part is that my 3-year-old laptop performs better, specs are as follows

-Intel 15-4200m 2.5GHZ Dual-core

-8GB of ram

-NVIDIA GT 750m 1GB

I think your CPU is the problem right there.

I'm no professional, but that CPU is pretty trashy I thought.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I do not have very much experience with the FX-4xxx series, although many people have told me they're quite dissapointing.

Before I clicked on this I knew you had an Nvidia graphics chip cos almost nobody ever complains with an AMD graphics chip about performance.

the GPU is the main problem although the CPU isn't ideal either.

Could you recommend a CPU that i could use in the same motherboard?, i am planning to get the RX 480 when it comes out as well.

FX 6350 or FX 8350

I would recommend the latter.

The board is not exactly designed to handle 125W rated CPUs.

If you look at AsRock's website for the 970M Pro3:

The weaker 4+1 VRM Power Phase system cannot handle 125W Processors without any form of active cooling assistance.

In this case, I strongly recommend that you NOT get a 125W chip (e.g. FX-8350 or 8320), and get one of these instead:

  • FX-8320E

Thanks for the tip, I wouldn't want to ruin my motherboard. That would be bad

Thank you, ill look into it.

My bad. You should look at the 8370E. Your board can't handle 125 watts so you should pick a CPU which is 95w (the 8370E or 8320E)
