No the 970 in SLI beat the Titan X by far. Most will say SLI is horrible but I have never had an issue with it. Personally just wait for RX480 benchmarks then make a choice

I believe the reason people call out that a single card is better than a sli setup is mostly because of compatability. Some games it will work great for and in some it will actually perform worse than a single card. This makes a sli setup highly inconsistent.

 

I'd personally go for a single 1070 over a dual 970. If it wasn't for the problem mentioned above, than it would be for the fact that at some point you may be able to add another 1070.

A lot of people are doing the same thing as you at the moment because everyone else wants to upgrade, now may not be the best time to sell. Instead of SLI 1070 why not go for a 1080?

970 Overclocked SLI is almost identical in every way to a custom 980ti OC. The 980ti OC beats a 1070 OC primarily because the 1070 OC is much worse (about 5-10% over stock) compared to the 980ti OC (15-25%).

 

Thus said, a 1070 is definitely NOT an upgrade. I would never tell someone to buy 970 SLI instead of a 1070, but since you have the 970 SLI there is no reason to swap.
