So my average download speed is 38Mbps and today it's randomly gone up to 64Mbps. Haven't paid any more for it, no word from my provider, we're paying for 38Mbps. Of course I'm not complaining, just curious as to why. Any ideas?

Maybe hardly anyone is your area is connecting to the internet? So there is no traffic from other people?

How much are you paying for? Well, for us we're paying the price of 50Mbps but they increased our speed up to 80Mbps. So, it could be that or they've set some new cables.

Thanks for all the replies.

As for the traffic, would that make a difference? I'm sure you can only get what you pay for regardless of how much traffic there is.

I'm assuming they upgraded us for free haha :D

If your ISP is any good they will provide you the full speed you are paying for at all times, even if they only promise "up to" that speed.  However, there are many people suffering with ISPs that sell speeds higher than they can deliver and thus the amount of traffic in their area actually influences the speed they can achieve (they get less than they pay for during peak times).

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I've never experienced speeds below what I'm paying, but to experience higher is a surprise!

Figured it out. After speaking to BT this morning turns out they sent an email to all members, including what they'll be upgrading:

"-We're increasing the speed of BT Infinity.

-We're increasing broadband data allowances.

-We're giving our best ever security to everyone.

-We're giving loads more BT Cloud storage."

So my speeds have gone up by 3MB for a £1 difference. I'm a happy bunny.
