I am upgrading my system this summer to the new Skylake and Polaris Architecture.

Yes, this is a pretty overkill build but I am very passionate about building computers and having a work of art in my room.

I am going for a blue/white/black and possibly a touch of red build.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks!!!!

Edit: For the graphics card I am most likely getting the MSI GTX 1080 Sea Hawk Hybrid Version.

You're going for blue/white/black? I don't see ANY blue on that list lol. Should be fine aesthetics anyway though.

It also doesn't make a ton of sense to have a NVME drive AND an SSD. you don't really need fast and really fast drives in the same computer (unless there's some very specific, deliberate thing you want to do) Scrap that SSD for more HDD space or LED's or pocket the difference or something. Other than that, enjoy!

Already have all the drives. The SSD was brand new from a guy on craiglist and was half off. As for the blue... I have blue led fans, rgb motherboard, and custom cables.

CLOSE ENOUGH!

If you really want blue though, consider a more blue motherboard.... Gigabyte released a new Z170 board at Computex called the Z170 Designare (it also has an X99 variant) and its primarily white, black, and blue. and its RBG. if you wait a few weeks it may come onto the market for you. Other than that, great build, and enjoy! =)

Thanks! haha. This build is probably about a month or two away... Still waiting on G. Skill's new colored TridentZ to come out as well as the Sea Hawk 1080's pricing and performance.

I don't know what it is but I just like the asus rog style... plus even though it has a huge price it has exactly what I need and want. I looked at asus's white blue and black motherboards as well as msi krait and others and they are just not so appealing.

I looked at them.... I just don't like that they tend to wane on the single core performance. It's not completely out of the question... I just will never need the extra cores and the extra pcie lanes.

Or get the proper GPU now and get a better display later. Also 6800k instead of 5820k if you're going that 6 core route.

Here is an image of the Z170 Designare. Its a fair bit different than the Z170 A or Z170 Deluxe white and blue boards that Asus has. And if you still want asus board thats fine, i totally get that. I've Asus myself.

I will be going 4k eventually. Also if i do x99 platform I might as well get a 6800k or something like that.

The IPC difference is 5%, and for a 60hz display on most games you don't even need really anything more than an i5 at 3ghz.

Also the 6700K already has a turbo boost of like 4.2ghz, while the 5820K only turbos to 3.6ghz, making overclocking on it much more sensible as well

and it's not really about needing the cores, it's that the difference is $100 on the motherboard, and you get the much better overall platform

Wait hang on, if you have an i7 4790K at 4.7ghz there's no reason to replace that CPU the 6700K once OC'd will hardly be faster

and as for the 4k display, you can get 4k 27" IPS free-sync displays for just under $500

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/JhkwrH/lg-monitor-27ud68w

While the equivalent G-sync display is $769

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/QZwqqs/acer-monitor-umhx1aa002

It's always a better idea to upgrade your display first, because newer/better/cheaper GPUs are coming out constantly while display tech doesn't change as often, and for near the price of the 1080, you could get the RX 480 with a solid 4k display that'll last you forever.

now of course AAA games will be running at 1080p, but lesser/older games will run at 4k on the 480 no problem.

The 1080 can push 4k at a pretty solid level, but it's still not 100% there, if you upgrade later rather than getting the display now in preparation for the 1080ti and Vega GPUs, you'll just end up with a GPU that can't properly power your display in games

You have a good point. I do have a good reason to get the 6700k though as with the z170 chipset plus the cpu you get more pcie lanes. My current setup bottlenecks my intel ssd because the bandwidth is cut short.

Yes X99 will solve this but I am not having much luck finding a mb with the same features as the one in the list.

Like I said I am still working through this as it is going to be at least a month or two before I can buy the parts which gives time to tweak things.

I will definitely look at the x99 stuff though. Thanks again.

the RX 480 is NOT a 4k card. don't. do. it. You would have to turn too many settings down in order to get playable framerates on most current games, let alone future games. If you're going to invest this much on a computer, don't cheap out on the GPU. This isn't fanboying, this isn't green vs red. this is just the RX 480 isn't designed for that workload.

4GB of VRAM just isn't enough for 4k these days. Period.

I'm aware they're talking about coming out with an 8gb variant for slightly higher cost. but the card wont be powerful enough to really take advantage of workloads that could exhaust 8gb of VRAM, so again, don't do it. now you COULD crossfire two RX 480's with 8GB VRAM, and that would work decently well at 4k, but now you're sitting at about the price of a 1080, so just get that and avoid all this hassle.

Yeah and I dont even think its has gddr5x. I'm not going to get it don't worry... I think he was just saying that yes the 1080 is not fully 4k ready so it might not be a bad idea to get a 480 then upgrade to the 4k ready 1080 ti in a year. But this is not very appealing to me, as it will be better than anything I have had and i am sure it will be plenty.

The point, is that you have the 4k display for the games you can run at 4k with a 480, and then any AAA games, you can pretty much max out at 1080p and 1080p scales perfectly with 4k.

And then eventually the 1080ti and Vega GPUs come out, and then you win, because you already have the 4k display. And then you aren't spending an extra $250 dollars for G-sync, to get adaptive sync.

and ya crossfire isn't exactly the best solution, but it's actually still cheaper than the 1080, as the 8gb 480 cards will most likely cost $250, but waiting for the next next gen cards would be better

Wait, why, why would you buy a $400 Z170 board. What features were you talking about?

And now we must follow the logic

Why would you buy a $600-700 dollar GPU, to play games at 1080p, instead of buying a 4k display with a $250 GPU, to play AAA games at 1080p high settings, and any other lighter games at 4k.

Anyways if you just want a good at everything X99 board, look no further than the Sabertooth

1080 can do a pretty decent job of 4k. you MAY run into some slight VRAM issues in future games, but as far as framerates go, its definitely the first single GPU that can do it well.

And if you're considering going X99, just go X99 Designare instead of Z170 Desingare. Broadwell-E compatible. and since its a new board it will come with all the modern features of a Z170 and more (rather than all those older X99 boards from Haswell-E days) problem solved! no idea on the pricetag though.

It is like 90% there, but how long until the 4k display comes? Because if one is going to game at 1080p, it's better to game at 1080p on a 4k display, rather than having a high end GPU sit effectively idle on a 1080p 60hz display

So I did a slight bit more research on those gigabyte boards I was talking about.... turns out the Z170 Designare is actually a primarily black board with blue and white highlights, VERY different from the X99 Designare...

Do not fret, the Z170 DOES have a good looking black/white/blue LIKE the X99 Designare, but its a different name (and for some reason isn't on their site yet, maybe still in the final stages of development). Here are their model numbers in case you were considering them aesthetically for your build

The Z170 I was talking about: GA-Z170X-UD3-ULTRA
The X99 I was talking about: GA-X99-Designare EX
