should i EVGA step up to a 1070 or a 1080

hey guys,

So i bought a 970 a week or so before the pascal launch.. I really needed a card and i didnt really feel like not gaming for a week (old card died). 970 has been awesome but my friend told me there is a step up program with the EVGA card i bought and i looked into it and it seems like a no brainer with how much better the pascal cards are (gives me an upgrade path for a new higher resolution monitor aswell... currently running 1080/60hz)...

So, Im not sure if i want a 1080 or a 1070... it seems like the 1080 has quite a performance gain over the 1070 and if i was considering a 4k monitor (im fine with 60hz... not a competitive gamer) it seems like the only choice.

is it worth it to go up to 4k ? i think the added screen real estate from the additional resolution will be welcome as well for non gaming tasks.... let me know what you guys think ! would you go 1080 or 1070... 1440 or 4k ?

A single 1080 won't run all games at 4k. You'll likely need to turn down settings in some games. I would opt for a 1440p display.

CPU: AMD 5950X    MB: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero    RAM: HyperX Predator 64GB    GPU: Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti FE    SSD: Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB
PSU: EVGA 1200w P2    COOLING: EK AIO Elite 360    CASE: Fractal Design Torrent
DISPLAY: LG CX48 4k OLED    AUDIO: HIFIMAN Arya SE

From the benchmarks I seen the 1070 can get 60fps in most games maxed out at 1440p, I would do that instead of spending a lot more money for a 1080 + 4k monitor preferably with gsync. Maybe vega/higher end pascal can do it but that wont be for a while.

I have a laptop with a 4K screen and a 1440p monitor. I must admit, the 4K screen looks awesome, but definitly not necessary.

I'd say it all depends on your budget. If you have enough, just buy a 4K screen with a 1080, but be prepared to pay over a thousand dollar. A 1070 + 1440p monitor is an awfull lot cheaper....

It would be a lot more consistent, as well. A single GTX 1080 at 4K is going to be fighting for 60 FPS in a lot of recent games unless you make quality sacrifices. Maybe big sacrifices if you like high minimums.

I'd still lean towards a high-end 1440p display over a similarly-priced 4K display these days. And as another alternative, there's 3440x1440… it's right between 4K and 1440p in pixel count, and I imagine that makes it a great fit for the GTX 1080.

im limited to the step up windows that evga provides. this is 90 days, i have like 40 remaining.

so i essentially have to choose between which aftermarket cooler variant of the 1070 or 1080 ide like. im personally leaning towards the 1080 so i can be ensured that at a higher resolution it will work well. from the comments 1440p seems safer for the long run and i think i agree. as far as frame rates go, im not that concerned about 144hz, 60 is fine for my eyes.

This is a issue i've been debating, as there is no obvious best answer, and it depends on budget (the way I see it, for a new monitor and a 1070/80 is going to cost atleast 1500 Canadian Dollars, 1000 USD?) and what you want to be doing

option 1.stay at 1080p with a 1070, no monitor upgrade atm, just turn every effect as high as it can be and enjoy. (most budget friendly and likely sensible)

option 2. buy a 1440p 144hz monitor and a 1070 (spend alot of money and maybe not be satisfied with the experience (fps dips, especially if a freesync monitor is the only economical option)

option 3. buy a 4k 60hz monitor and a 1080, possible downscale to 1440p.

option 4. sit on my hands and wait for everything to drop in price/ have a sale ( Holiday 2016 or Q1 2017?)
