I'm a novice to the PC world so stick with me. I'm getting ready to build a system and the mobo says it supports dual channel but the kit I want has 4 sticks so does that mean it's quad channel and won't work? Forgive me if that's a dumb question.

The board I plan on getting is an Asus Z170-A

Can't you just get a 2x8gb kit instead? It should even be cheaper and / or with better specs.

basically if you wanna populate all 4 ram slots you're doing it right, but I would opt for a 2 stick kit of the same total capacity, that way if you want/need to get more memory later you can with a smaller cost.

So I can use 4 sticks but it's smarter to just populate 2 for future upgrade?

Yes... but there are also other advantages for going with 2 sticks only.
