I got Overwatch on PC because getting it on console would require me to buy a console and because I knew I wouldn't have been able to play it on a controller anyway. That being said, my laptop plays it at ~40fps on absolute lowest quality settings at 1360x738.

So, in order to remedy my situation I've sought to make a cheap build surrounding the newly announced R9 480 since it'll only be $199.99. The build can be found here

What I'm asking from you all is are there any more places where I could shave a few bucks off? I'd like to at least be able to play the game at 100% render scale @ a consistent 60fps. The monitor I'll be playing on is 1680x1050. I already use it as a secondary for my laptop.

Alternate sources for Windows license?

No case (just spread parts out on table)?

Really I'm not sure how much cheaper you can go :P

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Are we allowed to mention alternate Windows sources? Staff has complained about mentioning that before but I guess you know best since you're staff too :P

Well only legal ones obviously, but there are ways to get it cheaper, supposedly, like reddit.  I've never tried, and I don't trust them, but as long as you're not pirating it...

Dump the h60 cooler, get the os on kinguin/reddit for $20-30, get the toshiba 1tb over the WD 1tb, and get a better psu.

Not sure if this is allowed here as you have mentioned, if it's not my apologies.

I have bought a few from http://www.kinguin.net/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=windows+10 and never had a problem.

I've heard not so great things about both g2a and kinguin, /r/microsoftsoftwareswap feels more reliable to me since you can choose from reputable sellers as set by the community

Umm, okay? What's your budget? This build costs about the same as yours.

Welp, I realized it and edited my post already. :P

Anyway, just saying you're trying to cut costs is not good enough. Depending on your budget, we can cut corners where possible and maintain performance, if necessary. But without a budget it's hard to say, because even an $80 APU can play CS:GO at 1080P.

Speaking of games, what are your use cases exactly? Will you be gaming at 1680x1050 or will you get a better monitor sometime near the future?

I want to play Overwatch on 100% render scale at a pretty consistent 60fps. However, going above and beyond that would be p good too. I've honestly got no budget, I just want it to be good, cheap, and not kill itself. I'll probably just stick to 1680x1050 because the monitor was only $20 USD.

This is incredible. How's the microarchitecture of this processor generation perform? It wouldn't bottleneck an R9 480 or gtx 960 would it?

Won't bottleneck a gtx 960/r9 380, but i doubt it won't bottleneck an r9 480.

This is Excavator, which is another incremental upgrade to the Bulldozer architecture. It has slightly better single threaded performance and power efficiency than Steamroller, which is the sole reason I recommended this over an Athlon X4 860k or 880k. The single threaded performance in these CPUs are pretty low, and every bit of upgrade helps, since they do fine in multi-threading workloads.

It wouldn't bottleneck an R9 380 or a GTX 960, but I'm not sure about Polaris.
