Used i7 4790k

Is it still worth getting a used core i7 4790k. I am planning on upgrading my core i3 4170 and later get an RX 480 also to replace my gtx 960.

Yeah it's a great processor, and the benefit of buying it used is you might find someone who's already over clocked it, and thus know what to expect!

Only if you have a Z87/97 board already. But if so, the 4790k can be a nice upgrade, yes.

Even at stock that'll be a considerable boost from the i3

I meant over other locked SKUs.

as of now i have an Asus H81M-K motherboard. i'm still finding a used z97 mobo and then I'll OC it myself.

Then you are better off getting a locked i7 or a Xeon equivalent.

 

Considering the lower prices of a locked SKU + what you'd sped on a mobo, you could more than likely invest that cash into a better GPU.

but the 4790k has higher stock clock than the locked i7 4790.

Unlock i7 has a significantly faster stock clocks. Base 4.0 GHz is certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Those 400mhz aren't going to be as useful as the sheer processing power of a better GPU.

Even new, the price difference doesn't seem to be very big. Kind of in that range where one could go either way.
