I recently upgraded to 1150, so I basically have a LGA775 Core 2 Quad left laying around, only thing I bought was the motherboard (years ago), the PSU (also years ago) and a GTX470 last week to have a complete PC... the rest (RAM, C2Q, HDD and cooler) was free.

This is going to be a gaming PC for my teenage godson. I plan on giving it to him for Christmas, my brother is going to give me a case since I don't have one.

I sleeved the PSU and added a second 6 pins PCIE connector since the 600w PSU I'm using only had one and the 470 needs 2. To do this I opened the PSU and soldered new 18awg wires to the board itself.

So here is the PC, working on my temporary "chair case", I'll get the case next month when I'll go visit my brother.

exciting :)

May I ask how you expect that thing to be able run anything.

EDIT:

Ok, the CPU and RAM should pull through, but even a 480, 570, or 580 would be SUCH an improvement in games. Wanna trade that 470 for my 480 at least?

It's a PC that's gonna be used for gaming on a 1024x768 17" LCD (the only one my brother has) and it's gonna be a Minecraft and CSGO "box" ... so it really doesn't need that much GPU.

Thanks for the offer though! :)

Wow, I knew the GTX 4xx series were room heaters, but I was not expecting that level of fan noise! When she heard, my wife thought there was something wrong with it! loll xD

Totally forgot how slow HDD are, both at home and at work, the PCs I'm using have SSDs.

Anyway, I had a pair of old 160GB that I'm gonna use in RAID 0 instead of the 5400rpm 320GB I initially used. It's not SSD speeds but it'll be faster, I'll leave the 320GB in there as a storage HDD.

Like the title says, this build is made up of leftover parts, apart from the GPU, I didn't buy anything else ... for now.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had some time to kill this weekend since we had a holiday on Friday, so I made a backplate for the GTX470. Used the painting "carbon fiber" trick, though it didn't came out like I was hoping.

I'm visiting my brother in 3 weeks so I'll have the case and I'll be able to start working on finishing everything.

  • 1 month later...

Finally got the case this weekend, I was supposed to get it before but last time I saw my brother, he forgot to bring the PC.

Didn't know what was in there until I opened the case yesterday, all I knew was that his old PC stopped working one day and he just replaced it with a new laptop.

I've put everything in the case yesterday and did a few tests, everything works fine. The old computer was a Seanix pre-build (don't know the model), I didn't take any pictures yet but it's the case on this picture I found on Google;

11EW.jpg

The specs were;

Seasonic 80+ 350w (forgot the model number)

MSI p965 Neo

C2D E4400

3GB DDR2 (1x1GB and 1x2GB)

Samsung Writemaster DVD-RW

AMD Radeon HD4650 (I know that was an upgrade, forgot what the PC came with)

Don't know about the HDD since he removed it and slapped it into an external case, but I think it was a 160GB WD

It stopped working because the PSU is dead, and when it died it took the motherboard with it, I tested the CPU, RAM, GPU and DVD writer and they are all fine.

I updated the original post with the final specs and I'll post a picture later today or tomorrow with the case and how cramped that damn case is! xD

  • 4 months later...

Was testing the build and after a few hours of different benches the room smelled like melted plastic.

After checking I found out it's coming from the PSU, this piece of garbage if anyone wonders;

http://hecgroupusa.com/products/switching-power-supply/atx-12v/hp585d/

Turns out it only supplies 15A on the 12v rail, that's 180w max ... that builds pulls around 450w total (the GPU alone pulls 225w on the 12v), so before I burn the house I decided to go with a cheap alternative.

So I got a CoolMax 700w PSU for $40 (CAD), it can supply 570w on the 12v (probably less IRL), so it's not perfect but already MUCH better. I'll downclock and undervolt the 470 a little and I already have the CPU@2.8Ghz instead of 3Ghz so I could also undervolt the CPU.

I would have preferred something better but the whole point of that build was to do it for free from parts that I had laying around. I'll update the OP to reflect the new parts!
