Intel i7 3770K or Intel i7 4820K?

Hey Guys,

 

i am torn between those two CPUs. I can't decide wheather i should get an i7 3770k+maximus v formula or an i7 4820k+rampage iv formula. I like the i7 4820k better because it is faster than the 3770k and overclocks way better. But i don't like the point that x79 starts to show it's age. Maybe it isn't a problem because i don't need more than two SATA 3 ports and i don't need much usb 3.0 either. Right now i don't even have a usb 3.0 device. But one the other hand the maximus v formula has neat features like wlan and SRT which i find quite handy.

What do you guys think? Is it worth investing in x79?

Thing is:

Hardcore edting: 4930k

Regular editing: 3770k, 4770k or 8350.

Gaming: any i5, i3 or FX processor

But you have to be very lucky to get an 3770k beyond 5 Ghz or even beyond 4.6 with reasonable temps...

Temperature are worse on Haswell than on Ivy Bridge.

yah, but any ivybridge over 4.5ghz is going to start bleeding some serious heat.

the 4280K will be a better overall chip because It does have a higher thermal design, it offers more PCI-E lane bandwidth, and it overclocks a fair bit better and it has a larger physical surface for cooling contact.

If you're not doing a custom loop for cooling then I suggest a strong dual fan rad cooler or a very large oversized aircooler like the CoolMaster V8 GTS or the thermaltake frio advanaced 130mm

I would buy an H100i a good custom loop is too expensive for me. But the 4820k has no temp probs anyway because the die is soldered to the IHS.

4820k Is stupid to buy. You just get an i5 with extra pcie bandwidth and more ram.

It's not solderd into the IHS. cause Intel wants to make it cheap. so they just put thermal paste inside the dies

Yes, the 3770K won't overclock as good as the 4820K (on air/normal liquid) if you get an average 3770K, that won't be modified. The 3770K's IHS paste problems hold it back, while the 4820K has a soldered IHS, meaning heat transfers are more efficient.

The thing here is, how much are you willing to invest, and how long can you wait out the build? Technology is moving so fast, within 6-12 months, your expensive build will be outdated. If you wait one more month the Rampage IV Black Edition will be out, with an awesome sound solution, sleeker looks, and better RAM trace configurations to optimize RAM overclocking. If you wait just 11-12 months, LGA2011-3 and X99 will be out, introducing DDR4 and maybe even 8 core unlocked CPU's to the consumer market.

Actually all LGA 2011 CPU are indeed soldered into the HIS. Really, all of them! Including the i7 4XXX

4820K and 3770K are both Ivy Bridge, except the 4820K has a soldered on IHS instead of poor quality thermal paste.

Ivy-Bridge-E is soldiered, and does not use thermal compound, same goes with Sandy Bridge-E CPU's as well.

Only the LGA1155 Ivy Bridge and LGA1150 Haswell CPU's have bad quality thermal paste inside the IHS. Also, the 4820K is not just an I5.

I guess i'll take the 4820k

 

4820k if you need all those PCie lanes (uber 4-way sli or lots of expansion cards etc), it's a good choice if you want to overspend on mobo anyway, because this way you at least get better mobo.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

You are 100% right but the think is i need a new CPU now and not in 11-12 months. The Rampage IV BE is sadly not an option for me cause i don't want to spend more than 300€ on a mobo. Like you have said technology is moving so fast. But the combination of an i7 4820k+rampage IV formula should last for about 4 years (hopefully) and this mobo has excellent audio aswell.

the overbuilt air coolers for overclocking are pretty cheap around 50~60$

I personally want to use the Coolermaster V8 GTS in my next build if I go with a desktop, it looks to perform about the same as many AIO Loops so check that one out. The Frio and NiC thermal take coolers have a couple dual fans and are around 50$. Check them out.

4820K is no haswell its ivy bridge e 

the temps on ivy e are better then ivy bridge ( 1155)
