Hi, I currently have an AMD FX-8320 CPU and was looking into getting an Oculus Rift later on this year but wasn't sure if my CPU be able to support VR. AMD has said that an 8350 can support VR and I wasn't really sure how much of a difference there was between the two. Any help is much appreciated. Thank You :)

Really most of the load of VR is definitley on the GPU. On the Steam VR Test it said my G3258 @ 4.6Ghz was good enough for VR.

Is a G3258 comparable to an FX-8320? Sorry not familiar

So long as it's OC'd to 4.5ghz you should be fine

what's your GPU though? and why not the Vive? It's like way better with the controllers

the G3258 is a dual core, which can really hurt in some games on the minimum frame rates, which could be pretty bad for VR

Since most games use 4 threads, it's actually as fast or faster than than an FX 8 core. at 8 threads, the FX chip will probably win with an OC.

My GPU is a GTX 960 But I'm planning to get maybe a GTX 1070 before I get VR

And idk why not the vive, i'm just trying to save money wherever possible but one large reason is there is definitely not enough room to move around with the Vive

Also, I've never overclocked my CPU because I have absolutely no experience with it and don't know how much is too much and heard you can ruin your stuff

Well also what motherboard do you have? really all you do is go in, turn off your power states.

Then you just up your multiplier and raise your voltage slightly until it's stable my 8300 hits 4.5ghz at about 1.4xxV

overclocking can/will reduce the life span of your CPU, but that's like an 8 year life span to start

Also the new RX 480 is probably going to be a better upgrade choice, it's looking to basically be a 980 for $200-250

And just make some room for the vive man, the rift won't even be comparable, not sure when it's controllers are coming up, but it still won't have the lighthouses

Motherboard is an MSI 760GMA P34-FX and ya I was looking at that GPU as well, still not completely decided. And ya lol, also still not completely decided on the rift or vive, but I agree that the vive is probably a better choice, it's just the price lol.

Btw, do you think one 480 compares to the 1080 after the show at computex considering I believe both pretty much had single cards at 100% since there were dual 480's and it was at 51%?

One is $200-250 and the other is $600-700 lol the RX 480 is looking to be on par with a 390x or 980 ish, and the 390/970 was the minimum target for VR

I wouldn't really pay attention to that benchmark but ya, 2 480s in a best case scenario can probably beat out a 1080 in DX12, that probably won't be normal though

plus the 480 would save you like $200 bucks compared to the 1070, so there's your vive money
