It has a very good story. Pay attention to what happens in the game and the conversations and the way things evolve, don't play it like a generic shooter without story.

pay attention to how the background music changes as you advance in the game, how the soldiers start to change the way they talk from a friendly tone with lots of words to more and more swearing, short conversations, they get angrier and rougher with the population in the game almost like they're forgetting why they came there in the first place. Throughout the game there's several moments where you may think there's only two choices to make but in fact if you try hard there's one or two more ways.

There's something there about horrors of war, ptsd , how your thinking can be influenced by group mentality and so on..

 

There's a lot of moral questions you would ask yourself when you're done, if you're not just going blindly through the game shooting everyone in sight.

The game doesn't really give you a choice as to whether you play it like a generic shooter or not. The game mechanics are those of a generic shooter. The story it tells is by far the strength of the game, but you're mostly listening to/watching the story in between sections of playing a generic cover shooter with entirely gun-based interactivity.

 

I still think it's easily worth playing once for the price it goes for these days. It was certainly better at what it did than most generic shooters. I just think people tend to make this game into more than it actually is in a lot of these discussions.
