C++ Starting Goals

School ends in 2 days where I live and I want to keep the ball rolling. I am teaching myself how to program and a couple other things this summer. I have about 864 hours to learn so I want to start now, My main concern is what do I do. Obviously there is the whole basics Hello World type stuff but I want a task or project that I can work on and struggle with for a couple weeks or more. I feel this is the best way I learn my experimenting and finding the answer on my own rather then asking someone else all the time. I was thinking a very basic game or program. This also leads into my other topic. I also want to learn Swift this summer. I already have everything set up in Xcode on my mac and have done some basics with the camera and some buttons but nowhere near what I want to do. I know it takes time but when I don't do anything over the summer I just feel my life passing away.

My teacher was very sarcastic and sorta like hahah in your face when she said you calculators can't solve exact logs so you have to do them by hand. Me being me learned to make a small program to do just that. Take the decimal value and output it as a log. I came back the next day and she was just like well so.

I like to solve Euler problems (Project Euler). They have over 500 different problems ranging in difficulty from extremely simple to some of the hardest problems in computer science. The problems will grow your math, logic, and computer science skills.

I wrote a MOD player once (amiga tracker music player). Was quite the ordeal to muddle trough back then but learned a lot, also about how to quickly skim trough and acquire information that has to do with the subject (music, notes, octaves, etc) rather then the actual programming, which is also important. I was ordered to write control software for a chocolate tempering machine once, just knowing c++ is not enough, i had to quickly familiarize myself with the ins and outs of the tempering process, you can't write what you don't understand.

 

It's also fun that the end result, a MOD music player, is useful (if you like tracker music) - I still use my player almost every day.

This is great timing because I'm in the middle of my final exam for programing (we have like 2 weeks to complete it) and I chose to do it in c++! What I'm creating is a very advanced... ready for it? ... Rock Paper Scissors game! It sounds really simple but here are some things to add to make it more complicated (as I am doing because the game has to fit some criteria).

 

Betting on games

Keeping track of balance

Make sure balance can't go below $0

Make sure you can't bet less than $1 (or $0.01 if you use doubles, but I used integers to make it more simple)

Keep track of statistics (player wins, computer wins, win/loss ratio, etc)

Use multiple Methods (actually called "Functions" but I'm used to Java)

 

I'm excited to finish :D

What the computer throws? Yes. I made it generate a random number of 0-2 (you could do 1-3, but I used a vector because it was required)

For example, if the random number is 1, the computer throws rock, etc...
