I have my server that has 4GB RAM max support DDR2

What would happen if I insert more than 4GB RAM (ex. 6-8GB)

I knew this a long time ago, but that was back when DDR was still a thing and I don't remember what would happen.  Don't want to waist money on too mych RAM for my server if you know what I mean

The system might just not see more than 4GB or it might not POST.

Ah okay.  The thing is that my motherboard has 4 RAM slots and I can only find sing sticks of 2GB DDR2 memory in the local computer stores and I want to fill the RAM slots to get the DualChannel RAM benefits.

Buying stuff online is not an option at the time

If its 32bit version OS it cannot use more than 4gb.

It's 64bit version on a P4 CPU SIngleCore with DualCore in hyperthread.  I use 64bit whenever I can since it's much better than 32bit in all ways

If dual channel worked back then like it does now you should only have to occupy slots 1&3 or 2&4...or 1&2 or 3&4 it depends on the motherboard specifically you'll have to look at the manual but you shouldn't have to occupy every slot to benefit from dual channel.

Well I want to fill all the RAM slots.  It's the best way to do it in every way even if the motherboard manual says it does not do any difference

Well if you don't have a 32-bit OS which only sees up to 3.25GB of RAM it depends on the motherboard. The motherboard might accept more than 4GB but we would need the exact name and model then look it up to see what it can accept. Sometimes a BIOS update can increase the maximum allowed quantity of RAM.

It seems likely to me that if it didn't work you could get your money back for the memory, just as most online retailers would. It might be worth explaining to the shop owner what your situation is and just see how their refund policy would apply.

It might be worth just giving it a shot if you can be assured you can get a refund.

Or else just sell the extra RAM on eBay.
