If you are going to quote the post, quote this.

First off I'm not sure if this is in the correct spot.

Now on to the problem. Before I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 text looked normal on all the things.

Now it looks like thistext.PNG.

(The bottom light blue area is the part)

I don't understand why it looks like that.

It's also like that in MSI Afterburner and in some other applications.

Text scaling options, perhaps?

Thy hath sinneth, and in thy life thou hast fallen to an unholy, unspeakable level of humanity. Thou hast given into your basest needs. And suffered many years under thine Satan-box. However, if thine be willing, as thy hast show yourself to be, thy can ascendeth into thy glorious fold of the glorious church. It looks like scaling to me.  Interfaces that use a lot of images or aren't quite up to the right modern techniques don't scale properly and so they show up (best case) just a stretched version of a low res render, and worst case, text gets so messed up you can't even read it

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Yeah. Just search "scaling" in the start menu

In Windows 10, right-click on the desktop and click Display Settings. You will see a slider for text scaling.

Yeah, OK, my scaling is at 125% and if I go lower or higher it is worse. So, my guess is that i'm stuck with this problem.

Are you running your monitor at its native resolution? That is, the resolution the monitor is designed to show.

at 100% the problem should disappear.  Note that you may have to log off and back on for it to take affect

I agree with this. Try relogging.

Well actually... 9_9

I assume you took this from a different display than the first screenshot?  That or cleartype got messed up because it seems to be set for a sub-pixel layout different than horizontal RGB

No, it's the same display. And the second part, you lost me at sub-pixel...

OK let me explain that bit :P

You know that each pixel is made up of 3 parts - a red, green, and blue bit, or "sub-pixel", right?  Now, to anti-alias text, systems like cleartype will take advantage of this to simulate resolutions higher than that of your actual display.  For example, because the RGB in most displays is aligned in vertical bars in that order.  So, consider black text on a white background.  By making a pixel to the right of a black one cyan (ie, turning off the red) this will create a black stripe along the right edge of that black pixel, but with a width of only 1/3 that of a full pixel.  This is why you will typically see blue fringing on the right of text and red fringing on the left of text when zoomed in.

but not all displays arrange the sub-pixels like that.  You can imagine that if you took an image designed for one type of layout and displayed it on another, this fringing, instead of smoothing the text, would stand out as weird colour "jaggies", and that is how the image above appears to me on my ordinary RGB display.

This is not a ClearType problem.

The problem is that the software you pointed to aren't high-DPI aware. So if Windows sets a larger scaling factor for your monitor (it auto detects what should be best, or you can define it under Start > Settings > System > Display > First slider you see)

What it means, is that the software doesn't get the user DPI scaling (or scaling factor if you want to call it that), so Windows takes the program, and scales it like a picture larger, so because it does that, it looks blurry.

There is a way to fix this, somewhat on the unsupported applications. You right-click on the program shortcuts or exe file for each affected program, and select Properties.

On that panel, go under Compatibility tab, and inside you'll have the option "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings". If you check it, the next time you run that program, Windows will do either do the following:

  • Inject code to the program to force larger text, and make elements that it can detect larger. Note: This only works for software made with a Microsoft GUI framework (Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation and Microsoft Foundation Class).

  • Do nothing. No scaling, no injection. Program will be small as if your DPI of your display was set to 100%. It does this when it can't force larger text and elements. This usually applies to programs not made with a Microsoft GUI framework, but rather with a third party one or in-house one.

We solved the scaling issue with afterburner, etc. already.  I was talking (in the last few posts) about the steam logon dialog - notice how the text has that weird colour fringing.  I'm almost certain that that is a cleartype issue.
