New build for cousin

the amd website says 750w. amd MADE THE CARD.

And AMD doesn't want to get customers blaming them because they didn't recommend a PSU high enough for it - 750W is overkill and they know it.

Look at benchmarks, not what the manufacturer says.

the benchmarks could be donald trump's for all we know. if u want to use 550w then it must be at least 80+ gold rated

...I meant get benchmarks from reputable websites - TechPowerUp, AnandTech, Guru3D, Tom's Hardware, Kitguru...

No, it just needs to be good quality. Gold efficiency isn't a must. I could easily run a R9 390 on something like the XFX TS 550W.

also a ton of seagate owners say their drive is dead. while you, lee32uk, may not have problems, many people do. I appreciate that horror stories are heard from all brands (welcome to 2016, where customer support is worse than fashion in the 80's) but wd and hitachi seem to have the least.

Where are these tons of unhappy Seagate owners ? Any hard drive can fail. Seagate are no less reliable than any other mainstream drive.

The 80+ rating doesn't make any difference to whether it will power it or not.

I'm not gonna argue over hard drives. Just look up dead barracuda online. It appears to be more frequent than "dead wd" or "dead hitachi" and they both have MORE purchases, meaning better chances. You are right though, they are better than many other brands or generic drives and their high end stuff is pretty decent
