mods.. all of you are so wrong xD

on topic: i generally keep to the idea of getting the most powerful single core performance you can get, with at least 1.5 core per server instance you intend to run.

resulting in either the pentium g3258 if you're gonna OC, or the highest clock speed skylake i3 you can find. this second one paired up with DDR4 will also potentially make higher density ram setups cheaper.

I'm pretty sure it's less the CPU and more the RAM and upload bandwidth that counts when it comes to a minecraft server. The RAM will store the chunks that are loaded and most of the work is offloaded onto the player's computer in terms of mods and whatnot.

nope. cpu takes a HUGE hit with mods, and defenately when lots of chunks are loaded.

for example, in 1.7.10 thaumcraft is roughly a 2x multiplication of cpu usage per chunk loaded.

Ah, it's been forever since I did minecraft server hosting so I wasn't sure. So I guess for someone who wants to host a server with 70 to 90 mods they would need a pretty beefy i7 or Xeon then.

i7 is wasted money, 95% of the server's load is in one thread, the rest of it are the netty threads for communication with clients.

So should I get the 6700k or what else?

refer to what i said before. i7 is waste of money.

get the fastest i3 you can get your hands on, fitting matx motherboard, 8 or 16GB of ram depending on your budget, and a quality power supply.

my OS of choice for minecraft servers is linux because of the significantly lower overhead in java, lower memory usage, and superior remote management.

as for storage.. it depends. if you have the budget for a sizable SSD, thats defenately the way to go, if you dont, get a 7200RPM hard drive from your brand of choice.

what watercooler, psu and case do you have?

Since I am not home at the moment and on mobile, I believe have a 700w or 800w psu, h100i watercooler and a phantom 410 or 450 case.

850 pro is there for the extended warranty (10 years :o) and double the read/writes per day, you can pick the 850 evo if you want to save 20$, that will also be fine but if you want extra warranty for 20$ that's also a good option

got the 32 GB of ram just because you can and it was the cheapest price per gb ddr4 on pcpp :)

Ok so I'm about to order the parts except with different ram. So for sure this processor and motherboard can handle a minecraft server with 70-80 mods.
