Computer randomly freezes

Go to solution Solved by Saptex,

So if anyone are having this problem where your upgraded Windows 10 freezes for exactly 60 seconds, go into device management and right click on every device you see and click check for updates. Then click on search automatically.

What happened when you upgraded was that some of your drivers wasn't properly updated during the upgrade, which then caused instability in your system.

So after I tried overclocking my CPU and my computer has been freezing for a couple of seconds and then turn back to normal. When it first happened I just thought "Oh, the overclock is unstable", but after giving the CPU more voltage, turning my BIOS into default mode, and even clearing CMOS the freezes keeps on coming. So maybe it's the CPU or could also be something else on the machine, but since I don't know what could possibly freeze my computer, I'd check if someone here has some experience with this problem.

Details on the constant freezing:

The freezes are coming randomly and usually lasts for about 15 to 40 seconds, and everything turns back to normal.

My computer Specs.

Intel Core I7-6700K

Asus ROG Maximus VIII Ranger

EVGA Geforce GTX 970-SC

ADATA 128 GB SSD

Random HD 1T

HyperX Fury DDR4 8x2 GB 2133 MHz

A PSU that I don't remember the name of, 700W

Windows 10 x64

Not sure really, since I can't open anything when it freezes. But I can open up task manager and have it open until it freezes again.

yes have task manager and admin tools resource monitor open and wait for a freeze

Ok, so it eventually it freezed again, and it was a good thing you told me to take a look in the task manager and Tool Resource Monitor since when it freezed the disk was pinned at 100 % usage. Do you know what might cause this?

could be several things

the resource monitor should show you what was using the disk during that 100% pin

if its a windows process then you can try sfc /scannow to fix stuff, and make sure windows is up to date

also make sure your disk is in good condition using crystaldiskinfo

if its in good condition and sfc scannow couldnt fix anything, you will have to clean install windows

I see this issue being pretty common for people who upgraded to windows 10 instead of clean installing

What I could see and understand from the Resource Monitor is that the system files was pinning the disk.

So the sfc/scannow fearture couldn't find anything and Crystaldisk said the disk was in good health. Does this mean I will have to reinstall Windows?

yeah
unless maybe you can try installing windows updates if youre missing any

but yeah the last resort is a clean install

did you upgrade to windows 10?

Yeah, I just had to get rid of Windows 8 and Windows 10 sounded like a good way to go.

mhm

the upgrade process sucks

it messes up very often, youre not the first person to have this kind of issue

thats why i always recommend to do a clean install in the first place

pretty much the only way to fix this issue is to do a clean install :/ sorry

Okay, well that kinda sucks.

But BTW, when I do the clean install would i be able to keep my files on my second HD or would the install require to clean that aswell?

before you clean isntall windows, move all your files to the secondary HDD

then unplug it

with only your main drive plugged in, install windows

after installing windows you can plug the other drive back in and all your files will still be there

then you can move those files to your main drive, or keep them there, or whatever you want

just remember you can only keep files, not programs

Yeah I figured as much, but anyway thanks for all the help. I might report back when I have done the re installation, in case anyone else is having this problem.
