Hi guys! So I am building a new rig this holiday and I am really sold on the ultrawide monitors.

I was at first looking at the LG 34UC87 which retails for about AU$1150 and planned to overclock it - only to find out that it can't be overclocked :(

I then noticed that the x34 predator has decreased in price and is currently retailing about AU$1600

To see the difference of 60vs100Hz I used my friend's Swift and downclocked it to 60Hz and 120Hz respectively since it doesn't support 100Hz

And boy was I able to clearly see the difference in terms of smoothness...

So I am so torn now, could someone help me give insights into the matter?
I will be using this monitor for my studies ( comp sci student ), video and photo editing pretty often and gaming whenever I have the time ( probably 1 hour or so per day + more on the weekend).

I will be running a 1080 and my parents were agreeable to spending more but I'm looking for some inputs first

Cheers!

yeah but the thing is, is AU$400 really that much worth it for Gsync and 100Hz? I know that's personal preference but I have also heard about bad QC on acer side

100hz, yes gsync, meh

as awesome as 100hz+ monitors are, i think ultrawides might be better for you.  as you said, you do some work that could use it, and games look quite nice on it.  Though the smoothness feels great, but 60fps is already pretty damn good.  Unless you can even utilize that in games, you're paying extra to see more frames that you might not be able to use.  But the ultra wide monitors has space you can use, and make games look pretty awesome.  However, note that if you do play dota, it might not look so good... =_=

for me, i plan to get ultra wide monitor next.  thus... my opinion may be biased.... but after i kinda did my mental pro's and con's list, it seemed to lean that way.

yeah, I'm planning to get an ultrawide but I'm just wondering if a higher refresh rate ultrawide is that much more worth it because 60Hz was noticably really slow for me

oh my bad, thought you were debating 1080p 100hz or ultra wides.

i think you should def go 100hz ultra wide if you can get the money for it for sure.  but like someone else said here, the ACER stuff aren't known for quality.  From my own personal experience, every acer monitor i've owned, died.  at home, my brother's premium acer gaming monitor died in 1 month, and my office with like, 40+ monitors running, the only ones that died were all acer branded.... They were older square monitors, but... ya... i personally never bought acer monitors my self though.

If you can get someone you want, that is like, ASUS, or something, might be worth the extra money.  I'm not sure what ASUS provides in terms of ultrawide 100hz+ monitor though.

yea I know about that issue as I don't personally see acer as a top brand too :/

but ASUS one costs $1999 AUD and man at that price I don't think I'm gonna eat the bullet and would rather just go for either of the two I mentioned
