Howdy!

So, I have a Beyerdynamic DT990 headphones and want to get an amp/dac combo, or maybe separate ones (Dac and Amp). What would LinusTechTips forum reccomend.

I've looked at the Fiio E10K 2 and the Schiit Fulla. Is the Schiit stack something to consider?

I plan on getting some speakers in the future, so if they have audio output for speakers, that would be even better.

Thanks a bunch!

Do you have a rough price range in mind?

Why do you want one?
Is volume insufficient?
Is there other issues?

Sound quality would be significantly better using a DAC as opposed to onboard audio.

No.

Umm, yes, less interference for one, Much higher bitrates for two, And Yes, while I must concede that many people cannot tell the difference, those who can are the reason why DAC's get bought.

No. @Dackzy

High bitrate is very debatable as being beneficial. Interference is usually a non-issue, can be fixed if it is one, and doesn't necessarily just go away with external gear.

Alright, let me just go and  throw out my DAC because it seems  that there is no use  to have one, bback to  standard  realtek drivers for me. Forget studio quality audio, gotta get dat compression.

I didn't say that you needed to go throw out your DAC or that there isn't room for studio quality audio in a studio.

OP wants to buy a DAC, main use for  DAC is studio  quality audio. OP probably wants better sound quality. Studio audio is better than onboard audio. I am not seeing your point.

It's not that simple. In a studio, audio data is not just processed but manipulated, and may go through many stages of it. Thus, there is a need for exceptionally low noise and high bitrate because inaudible distortion can quickly add up and become audible in the final recording. No such compounding happens during playback.

This is not to say that no DAC can imporve audio quality in a meaningful way; but at the budget and level of gear that we're dealing with here, the OP isn't going to be able to meaningfully upgrade their DAC now matter what.

And I would agree with most of  this statement,

You know about my setup SSL and I can hear  a very clear difference between plugging a y splitter in to use the onboard audio card and using my DAC. There is a measurable difference.

I would be happy to see those measurements. The difference isn't always so clear.

Sorry  OP, can you clarify the price range you are looking for and the purpose of the DAC to your setup?

If you want a cheap  DAC/MIC set get the focusrite scarlett (any version) it has  outputs for speakers too.

ummm unless you have a problem with your onboard you are just going to waste money on something you don't need. I have a post liked in my signature where I talk about the basic things and why you might need a amp and dac and why you don't.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.
